2011.
I hate it when they compare it with a Golf, the Golf hasn't been any good since the Mk2, they need to drop this stupid comparison.

quote: John Simister: All Astras up to now have had that cheap but adequate rear suspension known as a torsion beam, in which two flexibly mounted trailing arms are held together by a tough crossbeam whose resistance to twisting makes it act like an anti-roll bar. It’s cheap, light, space-efficient and can be made to work well, as hot Clios and Méganes best demonstrate. But setting it up to handle precisely calls for hard mounting bushes, which ruin the ride and transmit lots of noise. That’s where a Focus/Golf multi-link system scores, allowing more accurate geometry control with lower noise levels.
Sorry Mr Simister but you havent got a bloody clue what you are talking about lol!
I think somebody is mixing up Torsion Bar and Twist Beam rear suspension as a result of trying to sound clever

You are wrong Torsion Beam and Torsion bar are two different things.
Clios and corsa and Astra vxr's have torsion beams
Saxo's and peugeots have torsion bars

Its normally called Beam or Twist beam..
Torsion suspension is pre-loaded hence there is no coil spring.
Has the clio got rear coil springs? I thought it was the same as the Pug/Cit style Torsion Bar?
I know fuck all about french cars so I could be about to eat my words

I do love the new Astra, Looks brilliant.
They are hardly going to drop that comparison are they. The Mk5 Golf was better than the Astra 5 in most trims anyway.

I think its the same thing just different terminology.
All I know is that in the Clio 182/197 spec and also the Corsa VXR brochure its refered to as a Torsion beam which I have just googled with the words Astra and Corsa VXR and it came up in bold in each site.

Yeh I did.
The new Astra looks fresher and better than the (Facelift Mk5) Mk6 Golf anyway. I'm hoping it will better it on release

Essentially there will be little difference between the two
Astra owners will say there is the best and vice versa. It will just end up with the Golf being the market leader based on reputation and customer loyalty.
I'd go for the Golf as "generally" speaking they tend to be the more driver focused car.

Drive one Fad, it's rubbish.
As regards to this torsion beam, torsion bar discussion.
Corsa VXR has rear shocks with springs rather than the seperate shock and spring combo found on the Astra/Clio.
But all 3 have the torsion beam whatever you want to call it.

Well I can't comment on the mk6, but cannot imagine it drives any worse than the mk5 which I thought was great....i'd buy a mk5 without hesitation despite the power deficit.
Its all horses for courses and what you prefer at the end of the day. Everyone buys a car to suit them not what others think.

This is what Pug's/Cit's have:
quote: A torsion bar suspension, also known as a torsion spring suspension or incorrectly torsion beam

This is what Astra's had:

TBH torsion beam and bar are both crap and no car should have them.
