After a discusion in another thread I thought I'd make this to get more peoples views. What do you prefer ; new cars or old and why?
Myself I prefer older cars, more character, more fun to drive, not packed with technology (good and bad thing I suppose) I like the way you can feel the road more, every bump, rattle etc. It all makes for a better driving experience IMO. So, what do you prefer?

wasnt there a pretty active thread in the general section?
prefer old as well.
most of the new 'affordable' cars such as the corsa, fiesta, punto etc i hate the looks of.

I prefer new cars to own & use daily.
Old cars are nice to look at if well kept but usually require too much work.

couldnt agree more ^
for example with my mk1 golf now i get everyone look at it young and old (for good reasons) people in traffic say 'looks tidy that for its age' and 'i used to own one of those'
where as with my previous corsas you just get cars that want to race you, and get no respect by older drivers because your a 'boy racer in a corsa'

However you want it to be I suppose, 10 year old cars for example are way behind in technology compared to todays cars.

I passed my test in the 90's so there not that old to me.
Old in my vision is no power steering or ABS or TC, airbags or any driving aids a time when you were connected to the road with just the steering wheel and tyres!!

I prefer older stuff but it has to be the right car, not just some old heap of shite.. Loved having my mk 2 golfs and that but couldn't live with one these days with us sharing a car.
New cars are great for there reliability, warranty, comfort etc but as above nothing beats battering down a back road in an old Golf...

new stuff lacks character. the car drives itself. if your losing control it has ecu's and sensors to help you not crash. this doesnt make you a good driver. older cars are far more fun. you can fix them yourself for cheap. can do simple modifications for cheap. changing a bootlid badge wont bring a warning light up on the dashboard and other stuff.
new cars are nice yes, but id rather drive older stuff and have the entertainment factor than something new with very little feel about it.

I genuinely wonder if peoples' opinions on this would be changed if they could afford new cars. I prefer older cars, purely for the reason I can afford them.

New cars, I'll never be convinced that older cars have better feel and give you better feedback (there are exceptions to every rule before someone says).
Automotive development has come on in leaps and bounds, just because you can't feel every stone through the wheel like you can on an old scrapper doesn't mean anything has been taken away from the driving experience.

modern cars all look the same really. back in the day could tell the difference between a kia and a focus. cant really these days.

Very true, makes me LOL when people cherish shitheaps. Just because it's old, doesn't mean it's 'classic'.

Based on what I drive theres been 4 generations from 1986 to present:
Order i'd want to own them is
4. E92
3. E46
1. E30
2. E36
So modern one being first choice as its most powerfull, and the only V8, however i'd take the original over the 90's version.
90's didnt produce a great amount of amazing cars IMO, not many i'd consider a future classic.

I just meant that in general, not aimed at you btw.
I know that if I had a lot of money I'd have a lot of cars, most of which mint examples of older cars that would get driven hard. But if I could afford one nice car like a GTR I'd be going for it.
edit: that didn't sound like I wanted it to, but I hope people can see my point.

I like old cars over new cars, but I think something tells me I'd rather own new for everyday use. I'd love to have a couple of old school motors though

If I could afford to do so, I would have a nice new, comfortable car for everyday driving, and an old, noisy, unreliable, crazy fast death machine for the weekends

I know mate
If I had plenty of money, enough to buy whatever I wanted then I'd say 90% of my garage would be older cars, 10+ years older.
