I've wanted one of these ever since I was about 14, and last night randomly a guy asked me if I knew anyone wanting to buy a Mk2 Escort. At the time my head was ruling my heart and I said, i'd love one, but i'm not really in the market for one at the moment. For the rest of the night i didn't really think anything more of it.

Then today at work, i couldn't think about anything else. I txt my mate to find out a few more details.

First of all, its a 4 door which i know is a bad start, but it really isn't putting me off.
It was a Ghia to begin with, but now its got an RS2000 2.0 Pinto on twin 40 dellortos.
There are no back seats, but it does have a bolt in cage.
Its by no means a concourse condition and it does have some battle scars, but i think that adds to the charm. It looks like a bit of a rally slag.
From what i could see the car had done 103,460 miles, but the engine has done a lot less and it runs really well.
It has HUGE rally slag lights which i would take off, but they come with the sale of the car.

He wants £2000...

Here are two pics i took. Sorry about the quality, but my phone only has a 2.0 megapixel camera...

I know the car looks a little abandoned in the pics, but its just parked there for the time being to keep it out of the way.

From what i could see there was quite a bit in the way of surface rust on the body, but the shell seems pretty solid. It does need a little welding on the chassis leg, but that would be sorted before it was bought.

What should i do???

...or buy it and take off the good bits and buy a low spec 2 door and put the good bits on that.

That fact that its a 4 door doesn't put me off as much as i thought it would. Its certainly a little different from other mk2's you see.

I think my heart is ruling my head too much on this one...

Also, looking at prices, £2000 isn't too bad for a 4dr in the condition its in and with a 2.0 pinto.

You can get 2.0 pinto engines with ease, old sierras had them as well.

Yeah the engines aren't hard to come by, but to be totally honest, if i was going to go to the bother of transplanting an engine i'd be sticking in a 2.0 zetec.

I've been doing a bit of looking around, and a good tidy shell with easily worth about 5k. This wouldn't take too much work to sort it out.
The other good thing is i've got a mate who's a panel beater, and another one who's pretty handy with at painting cars.

The thing thats tempting me the most is that there aren't many mk2's for sale up this neck of the woods. Its once in a blue moon that you discover one for sale...

It's a 4 door, it's not a hatchback.

MK IIs are simply a different level of brilliant.

Two grand does seem a little steep to me. Offer him 1500 maybe. But then I have seen rough or even basket case 1100/1300 2 doors in invalid carriage blue or similar, minus engine etc go for 1.5 - 2k on ebay lately, so the price of Escorts is obviously going the same way as all that old german shite with Beastie Boys medalions on the front.

It's very sad for me as I had my Escort chances snapped away from me by bad drivers when Escorts were still cheap and fairly plentiful, but I was more poverty stricken than I am now and unable to obtain a replacement.

Now they are dearer than ever, i'd be wisest waiting even longer I suppose and spending silly money buying a Mex or an RS2000 show car from some train spotter RSOC member and then Grp 4ing the living shit out of the beast.

At least i'd have a good working base and a solid car with all the right bits.

Big dough though whichever way one were to go about it nowadays.

After a long think and a long chat with my dad I think i'm gonna give this one a miss.

Since the mk2 is my realistic holy grail car, i don't want to get a bit of a dog and potentially ruin the whole experience. I don't want it to be a case of "never meet your hero."

I think i'm going to hold out for a good 3 door. Afterall, its what i've always wanted.

Thanks for your input anyway

Its on Toyo R888's at the moment, so i bet it'd be pretty good fun (or just scary) in the wet.
Driving sideways is what i look forward to the most when i get my first rwd car.

I've already had a fair bit of experience with my mates 3 series on a gravel track and fuck me it was good fun. I wasn't too shabby at it either

They look outrageously good without the bumpers. Do it Koo.

tbh there was a beige 4door escort out on the rallies last year, that had £30k spent on it....one lad in a wrc spec escort cossy wanted to swap as it was that quick.well built.

people say 4doors are shite, bla bla bla, there not. my mate rallies a 2door mk2 esc and won rallyx last year and rally year before. he said benefit of 4doors are...easy access to back seat area and abit more weight over the arse end that would help traction wise.

fair enough a 2door looks a lot nicer but 4doors arent as bad as what people think. im gutted i sold my mk1 4door as i was offered a mega spec cossy, t5 and a babyatlas needing a dif for £3k. ive spent twice that on my xe for my corsa now. and i could of had a sleeper 4door mk1 that looked bog stock just on its arse on rs4 spokes and a 420bho yb in it.....what a dick i was!
