I will be looking to get something in October.
At the moment I am thinking of going for an M3 from 05 onwards - price 15k-ish probably for a decent miler. BUT putting my sensible hat on I also need to start saving for a deposit for a house...
So...the cheaper alternative would be either a:
55 Civic Type R or Seat Leon Cupra R - price 8k...
Both of the above are similary priced with similar running costs...both should be reliable...same tax bracket etc...
I know the power delivery will be completely different in each...
The other option is to go for an Astra VXR or CDTI 150 with XP...for around 10-12k. I have had a few Vauxhalls so know them well and would ideally like to buy the Vauxhall from a dealer.
Ideally I would like to keep this car for a couple of years...
Decisions decisions...
I fear I may turn into the new Colin

M3 tbh
I'll sell you mine for 20k so I can get a V8 one
Further to that i'd add I dont think you'd get a 05 onward for 15k, if so it will be either rough or low spec. More likely a 03-04 plate you'd be looking at. Any newer than 05 hits the higher tax (£400+ per yr) if thats something to think about.

Yes but the Civic and the Leon would cost half as much to buy, run and service etc.
I think you're right about the tax changes...would have to be 03-04 and possibly convertible if I could get one...
It would hardly be used though and more for running around on the weekend to footy etc so I think I can discount the diesel astra.

No reason a man cant have both a house & a M3, you'll want to give the right impression to the neighbours. A bavarian cock rocket is just what you need!!

If you dont drive much, dont commute or that an M3 isnt going to cost too much to run.
There not the worst on fuel, I think mines pretty decent considering. Tyres can last if you make them. Get one thats just had a service & you'll have 30k miles before its due a large outlay.
Mines due a Insp 2 very soon, cost of labour alone is £600. Will be over a grand I expect.
Tyres are £1k min all round.
If anything breaks it will be double any of the other cars on the list.
But then if your only doing 5-6k a year then you might aswell enjoy them.
Fuckit I say, lifes too short might aswell do it now before your too old or got kids to feed etc
Just get it done min

Which is exactly what I dont want to be doing...
Although I do normally have a car fund that I put £50 a month into which covers most costs...just with the M3 I might have to up it to £100 a month...

Thats true but ive just bought a new build, it needs decorated throughout & my car needs a major service. House is the biggest purchase you'll ever make, M3's probably going to be the 2nd. Its ok to wave the white flag & get some tick so long as you can pay it back
Might be a bit of a doyle thing to say but my wages really are going up to accommodate my expenditure - live the dream!!

Mines due inspII in 5k which is about march next year but it needs it now really for the diff and gbox fluid change.
Indie service is around £700 for inspII

Mines got 3900 to go, probably hit that early next year. Apparently im overdue a brake fluid change as well!?
Think i'll be taking mine to BMW just to keep the main dealer service history. Get this one done keep it another year then probably look to change.
