its dodgy in everyway you can think of but plenty of people do it mines not had one on since i put the engine in over a year ago and its never had a problem. all it takes to kill your engine is one stone in there though

The cover doesn't hold it there. The covers there to stop you putting your fingers in it...

I know someone who spent £3k on an xe in a kit car, left the cover off and on his third drive out running the engine in, a stone got it, derailed the belt and destroyed the engine.
He now keeps it on.
I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

the safest way to show it off would be to cut out holes and put perspex cover in place

I never ever ever ever understood this craze...
Track - Maybe, just don't take an off road trip (gravel trap) and if you do, automatically shutdown the engine.
Road - Where dirt, grit, stones, hailstones, rubber, rubbish, all sorts gets in your engine bay, wel would you take the chance after an engine build?
Screams stupiditty over "looks" really.

Thats the auxilliary belt and pulleys, not the cambelt (iirc they have a cam-chain)
