I think this has been discussed before on here, but I have failed to find the old thread.

Anyway, just a passing thought of mine - what percentage of your salary would you spend on buying a car?

What percentage do you guys think is a reasonable amount?

Would depend on the car really, I'd stretch myself if need be. I sit comfortably on my car with my salary rather than being stretched

I'd only spend what I can afford. Never finance, or a loan of any sort. If I can't buy it out right, I won't have it. Apart from a house of course.

I've always said the same, but recently knowing I'm away to start working and I will be needing a reliable car so was thinking about loans etc.

Corsa is off the road almost every weekend getting worked on, just don't know how long it's going to be for this world

Why would you have to spend a large some for a reliable car? I bought a 1ltr Polo for £100. I never spent a penny on it and it lasted me a year. I had a Rover coupe recently, again, not a penny spent and lasted me with no problems what so ever and that was only £400. My statement stlil applies. If I can't afford it, I won't have it, unless its a house of course.

The only time I would buy a car on finance would be a brand new one, if I was buying used I'd always do it with my own cash.

As for how much, it would depend on the car, but I don't think it would bother me to pay 50% of a years salary on a car as I know I would keep it for a good few years.

Its all about buying a shitter for peanuts. Don't have to care, and if it lasts you longer than a couple of months your laughing. If it goes majorly wrong, ermm.. Bothered.

Yeah - I think I might do that, even if it's only got 6 months test on it

for most people, their car represents how successful they are...

i don't 'buy' into this notion because anyone can get finance on a new motor, but i can see why it might be seen as 'impressive' to be driving a nice (new) car...

much more to life than having a nice car in my opinion

There is also the slim chance I could eventually keep up with the problems with the Corsa

I've seen cars for £50 that run better than mine some days

Ever since the XE has gone in I've had trouble, perhaps just 'teething problems' which will eventually calm down.

Lost trust in it, don't want to go far encase she breaks down

Interesting you should bring this up. I bought my Clio 182 for £6k which was 37.5% of my annual salary, felt good at the time, but after a while I realised I'd spent too much and it just wasn't worth it. So sold that and decided to limit myself to 10% of my salary... ended up spending exactly half that £800. 5% of your salary ftw!

Although I tend to put 10% of my wages aside each month for mods too
