Rust is a big problem with them, especially around the bulkhead and chassis,
Dont worry if it drips oil, because if it doesn't its not a landy
Also the non turbo diesels are slooooooowwwww.
Edit: If it is going to be used for long journeys (towing a horse trailer im guessing?) or as a daily driver have you considered a discovery?
I used to drive one on a farm and it could handle anything thrown at it but with a little bit more luxury.

None of them are fast, but the non turbos are just shocking apparently.

Short of a V8 they all are surely?! They're not designed for flat out speeds, they're designed to be workhorses, tow heavy loads and go where not a lot else can!

Im not really bothered how slow it is, I drive a 1.2 mini so its fine
As long as it can pull two horses and get me from home to them and across the fields im happy. Cant go fast when towing regardless.
Maybe do a bit of off roading if Ash has his way.

Exactly! Anything Turbo'd should be fine. I have to admit I don't know a huge amount about them though lol.
I'd imagine rust is the main thing to look out for as they're meant to be pretty easy to fix for everything else.

Id go for a 200tdi, Also if you are going to be towing a horse with it, check the condition of the rear subframe very carefully.
Check that the anti roll bars underneath aren't bent (as if its been used off road they may be, A mate was forever bending these!).
Dont worry about any dents on the panels, or damage as everything just unbolts, there like a giant meccano set basically.
Il try to get hold of a lad i know who used to work in a dealer, Can remember him saying to keep away from certain ones with a certain diff on them (Cant remember which) as they are pretty weak and very expensive to replace.
And get ready to be driving around with your arm out of the window as there isn't much room in the front of them!!!

Rust around the doors and door sills are quite common, likewise in the back - from what i remember it was the 90 that had problems with the back floor pan rusting with the usual fix being to cut it out and weld in another.

Id go for one like this. This was the one my mate had, Sold it a few weeks ago. Was a 1970's chassis (Still strong with barely any rot on it) with a 200 tdi engine out of a 1990's and the top bodywork and interior.

i work on the defence support group and mod's landrovers try get an ex 1 of them as they are chassis treated and underbody coated once every year. the main problem weve had is rear disc brakes poor efficiency, front hubs leaking from around the swivel ball (but thats normally coz sum1 put them on wrong or stripped the threads)
and power stearing boxes leaking. ...... make sure they go in and out of 4wd easily as weve had 3 or 4 what slip out wen driving and you loose all drive lol

i agree about getting a disco instead. my dad and aload of people i know are in landrover clubs for off roading and they say discos are more comfy
also we got rid of a 90 for a disco as the drive was horrid

Err, you're the one wanting to join the local club missus.
Orange flashing light bars
You've got the Rex if you want to go fast too.

I think the thing with Defenders is they're more rugged, you can bash them about and it doesn't matter that much. Plus she'll be chucking hay and feed into the back, so it's good to have a rear deck you can just hose off. The one she's looking at today has a fully chequer-plated rear.

only 4x4 I'd consider myself purely because I just think they are old skool and the more modern ones look pretty decent for a car that was designed how many years ago? The basic design has survived the test of time.
I was never particularly interested in 4x4s etc. but after being taken out in an old rangey off roading last year I'd love to have a go at it some day!

You can bash discoverys about easily, the one I used to use on a farm used to get hay, straw, feed, tools, shotguns, animals thrown in the back all the time, also my parents use a cherokee on their land for carrying big water bottles, hay and straw on the roof, 4 dogs in the boot and tows a 3 horse trailer easily and comes with a more powerful engine and luxuries (compared to a 90/110) such as aircon, central locking, cruise control, electric seats etc, Will manage a muddy field as easily as a 90 (only disadvantage for more serious stuff is the size) and will get a tidy one for the same price as a rough 90.
Saying that I do love 90s but our jeep gets more abuse than most landys .

God don't mention jeeps. She'll have a crisis.
On another note, why do Defenders exist if Discos are better in every way Serious question.

Sorry , just mentioning there are others out there that will do the same job, but I would choose a landy.
I suppose they are more rugged, but the discos aren't as good off road as standard but by no means bad off road.
