Hi all as im turning 21 april i thought ide treat myself to a little bday prezzy in the form of a new engine. Now im after 250-300Bhp out of which ever i get. I was wondering which would be the easiest to tune/maintain insure etc. Any infor that you can give me on the pros and cons of each engine is greatly appreciated as i only have a limited budget (£2300) but my mate is a mechanic and offerd to do the converstion for free so no cost there. Cheers Guys.

You wont get 250bhp from an XE for the money you have.

C20LET would have to be the one

£2300 isnt really a lot if you want a C20LET engine and 6 speed box plus the mounts, shafts, better brakes, new clutch, custom exhaust, hoses and any other ancillaries.

Then while its out a refresh with rings, shells, bolts, water and oil pump and cambelt kit wouldnt be a bad idea too.

XE would be better to do a proper conversion with on £2300, you could have the engine refreshed and all other aspects you need changed for top qualitys bits too. Only problem is you will only have 150bhp which isnt what you wanted.

Other option, and my reccommendation would be a 3.2 V6, Not far off 250bhp with basic mods, reliable, loads of torque, great to drive on the road and would be under budget but still give you the power outputs you were looking for.

How much is your full budget then?

The engine, box, mounts and shafts alone are going to cost the best part of £2000 upwards, then on top of that you will want better brakes and suspension which is another 500-1000 depending on how good a stuff you want.

If i was putting a C20LET in a car i wouldnt let it go in without a strip down and at the least new shells pistons and rings plus water and oil pumps and cambelt kit.

Then to mod it your looking at at least 2k to see any worthwhile gains and keep some aspect of reliability.

You could bodge it in for 2-3k if you wanted a shitter, or 5-6k would make a good conversion with a reliable and respectable power output.

About 10 kilos heavier than an LET isnt much. Much more reliable and easier to live with day to day with similar power outputs but a more linear delivery for a fraction of the cost wins hands down for me.

fair points, but torque and ability to do some added chips and bolt on crap to get some fairly high power from the engine really means the c20let would be my choice. v6 would just be nowhere near as fast.

Also what proven mods will take a 3.2 V6 to 250bhp??They are around 220 standard and there isnt much stuff out theyr for them tuning wise.

C20XE with 100shot of gas through a controller will see you around 250bhp on an XE.

Apparently the 2.5 v6 weighs 111 kilos and the c20xe weighs 105 kilos.

Yeah but would you want to build a C20LET corsa on a £2300 budget? it would be a pretty dangerous nail that wouldnt last very long!

The £2300 isn't including the engine, so an extra £2300 is not bad really if you find a good engine.

From his first post it said hes got £2300 to spend on the parts for the conversion. He hasnt actually specified his entire budget yet but it doesnt sound like he has the 5-6k needed for a good build.

Plus finding a good let is near on impossible, i certainly wouldnt chance putting one in a car without a strip down first!

its fun to create. its less fun to hand cash over for something you didnt create.
