been looking at these as you can pick them up quite cheap now and would like to know a bit about them?
what do they go like and how well do they handle? also how reliable are they?

like 206's. Look nice.
Theres a limited edition one (gran turismo?!) with silly bumpers, that with 18"technomags and some facelift front lights looks flipping fantastic.
Always been put off due to being french tbh.
Id have a gti 180 anyday of the week.

i loved mine, interior isnt badly made like people make out and half leather is a nice touch, seats could be more sporty i felt, they are nippy enough, decent brakes and handle well, look ace with the right mods, mine had 105000 on it and ran sweet as a nut

Get the gti 180 if you can, but in all honesty, they are very, very poor performance wise, even the 180, theres no way that thing is putting out 180bhp, nice car to drive, huge big leather seats, but poor performance for a 2.0 16v.

as said they arent really 180bhp .. i wouldnt say they are slow for a 2.0ltr 16v tho .. mid to low 7s to 60 and 140 flat out? not too shabby not much slower if at all than its rivals on paper.

TBH i thought the 180s went no too bad.Not lightening quick but still go pretty good.Id have 1 over a CTR if im being honest. Not far off the pace of a CTR either.Only thing that makes them feel slow is the gear ratios.Far too long.

why try again?
the engine even tho suposively forged.. was down tuned as they couldnt make it in the reliable market, so in turn wasnt 180 bhp from the factory, and from driving them at work they are nothing special at all,
handle awfull,
power delivery is weak,
seats are big and heavy and the fabric on them liek mosy peugeot seats made out of that swade, cloth stuff wears easily

lot of nonsense on here as usual
there is a 138 bhp GTi and a 180 bhp GTi
the 138 puts out 138 and the 180 puts out 165
rolling road certified
the 138 gets to 60 in late 7's the 180 does it in low 7's
the 180 has slightly different suspension but handles pretty similar to the 138

They deffo aint down tuned by 40bhp.Maybe 5bhp at the most.A friend used to have 1 and it went very well, not far off the pace of my old Mk3 Astra Gsi v6 with app 190bhp but i dont think his was standard (think it was re-mapped) as it used to leave a local lads 180 with ease.I played with a Gti 138 in said Astra and pulled away like he was sitting still.
Ive also played with the above mentioned local 1 in my old XE Corsa and he was closer to me than expected but still not quicker. If it was running 140bhp against my app 150bhp Corsa he wouldnt have been as close as he was.
The engine in the original 138 gti had reliabilty issue's so it was re-vamped in the 180 with VVT and some other goodies to make it reliable.Deffo wasnt de-tuned to 140bhp.
