Sounds like you have worn piston rings. I bet the sump is really oily too around the gasket.

I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

How would worn piston rings cause the sump gasket to leak? If that's how you think the oil would get there.

Because when the cylinder is under pressure as it compresses and also as it fires, gasses leak past the rings and pressurise the bottom end. It literally blows the oil out past the gaskets. That is why it breathes heavily at the top end and gets oil everywhere.

Ah right. I wouldn't have thought you'd get that much pressure to blow a gasket tbh, but it's something I'm not dead sure about. Gonna have to be soon though, I think the rings are away on the XE. Wouldn't be able to tell by a leaky gasket with that though, I don't think it's ever been free of the black stuff. More just the fact it's belching out blue smoke.

All signs of worn rings and/or valve seats. Get it pressure tested. You can even buy the gear off ebay for under £20 and do it yourself.

theres nothing wrong with my piston rings, they've been checked the other day when the head was going back on, i have nothing attatched to the breather pipe and when going round cornres there a bit of oil coming out of the pipe, and it makes the engine bay messy :/
