Myself and Steve106GTi got invited by VW to drive the new Golf GTi today, hospitality was laid on and the bacon sandwich was nice and the chicken lunch was even better.

Shouldn't this be in off day if you aren't actually going to talk about the car?

Why no pics?
This thread is useless without pics.

I'm guessing from the lack of feedback that the Bacon and coke were the highlights of the day

Wouldn't suprise me coming from his hatred of VAG cars. It could of been brilliant but he'd still slate it!

25k for this?
Are people that own VW's fucking mad or what?
It's slow, heavy, if anyone ever complains about a lack of steering feel in a Vauxhall again I suggest you drive Volkswagens attempt at a GTi.
Ok it's not a bad car at all, it handles alright, it stops ok, it looks better than the Mk5, seats are nice.
But 25k car it certainly isn't.
Driving position? WTF is that all about, I tried adjusting it a few times and no matter how hard you try you can't get the steering wheel lower.
It runs out of puff at the top end of 3rd and most certainly needs a remap to bring it up to Mk5 Edition 30 spec as it's very lethargic above 80mph.
All in all, it's nice but once you have specced the car up its 30k for a very average hatch.
At least they make good chicken lunches.

would you say the Chicken lunch would be better from a Vauxhall or Volkswagen dealer?

at joe, the chicken would be of a similar quality, but of a less known factory, making the chicken from volkwagen seem better

Oh and the parcel shelf rattles, no bullshit.
I like the display you get between the dials, that is a nice touch and it's got a chavvy upshift thing for those VW owners that haven't quite mastered the art of changing gear.
So ok, I'm not a VW lover but I don't hate them.
Things I would have on the VXR from the GTi, seats, dash layout, air vents in the back and indicator stalks and it has a slightly better throttle response but that might be because I was trashing the tits off it and around town it might not be quite as good.

Oh and the door cards are covered in carpet, that's a good idea as I get sick of things rolling around in them normally.

Saturday 3rd May 1997.
No seriously it's alright, it deffo needs more power the chassis can cope with more but they need to inject some life into the steering. The steering wheel also is gorgeous, but the driving position lets it down so much.
Also for a 25k car it's all manual adjustments, I would have expected electric adjustments on the seats.
Russ Swift was there as well, there was only 11 of us so we got a car each to go out in with me and Steve switching between us. Millbrook is a massive place, very secretive though.
Lotus are currently doing long term road tests on the Europa, doing 30,000 miles in 3 different cars just driving around and around and around at a snails pace.

I thought the GTi always came with full electric, heated seats as standard?

Wish I could get into Millbrook too. I live about 2 minutes from there but you can't get anywhere near the track
