Fleets, leasing companies and pricing guides have been given a major say in the development of the new Vauxhall Astra, seen here for the first time.
The new model, which will make its world debut at September’s Frankfurt show before going on sale in the UK at the end of the year, is a key fleet seller for Vauxhall and accounts for nearly a third of its total UK registrations.
The five-door hatchback will again be the biggest seller in the range accounting for 60% of sales, and will be followed by the differently-styled three-door SportHatch later in the year.
In a series of workshops which started last September, fleets, lease companies and the pricing guides were encouraged by Vauxhall to give their views on engines, trim levels (including their names), pricing and equipment levels.
This follows the successful programme Vauxhall ran along the same lines in the build up to the launch of the Insignia last year.
Vauxhall has made a number of changes as a result of the workshops, which it says will become apparent when further details of the car are released.
Andy Gilson, Vauxhall’s marketing director, said: “The only part of the Astra which isn’t new is the name, and that name currently accounts for around 30% of all Vauxhall’s car sales.
“Not only is the Astra a crucial new model for us, we’re confident that its blend of design, technology and driver appeal will attract an even broader spectrum of buyers in this sector.”
The new Astra will have a roomier cabin thanks to an all-new chassis with wider tracks and a 71mm longer wheelbase.
Under the bonnet a new 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine offering 140bhp will make its debut to continue the engine downsizing trend, while three further engines developing between 100 and 180bhp will be offered.
On the diesel front will be four CDTi units ranging from 95 to 160bhp.
Options will include the FlexRide adjustable damping system, and AFL – Vauxhall’s adapative lighting system which debuted on the Insignia.

I'll let you know how it drives at some point

Not got it to hand im afraid, will have to nose about.
But it included wider arches, 19/20" rubber, 3 doors, and "beefcake" attitude.
Still a sketch atm though.

Mainly because the nova is an outdated box and it's tiny compared to what cars have to be today.
I don't think that looks too bad.
Yes it looks the same as everything in it's class but that's not a new thing.

So you would like to cruise around in a 1962 Morris Minor but with PAS and C/L?
Oh, how lovely.

It'd be like playing 360 games on a nes. A shitty little grey box with shitty little grey pads.
Things have curves these days.
