Great cars, nippy and great at handling straight out the box. A few breathing mods to free things up a little can see them to 140+bhp and for not too much money either, they're so much fun aswell. Get yourself on 106owners.co.uk for a look around, maybe some ideas.

Having never owned a 172 I couldn't comment, been out in a fair few though and they're great cars. You could pick a decent one up for 2.5- 3k now. Equally as good handling IMO and faster as standard, see 200bhp easily.

A guy i know got himself a 182 cup and he took me out for a spin to show me what it could do, i was far from impressed for some reason. Maybe its one of those cars that are quick but they just don't feel quick. I hated the seats too. I felt like i was going to fall off them.

My mates 106 GTi feels a lot quicker, but thats probably due to the noise from the pugsport exhaust (which sounds ace) and the 60mm drop all round.

if you can insure it 172 easy!

i have had both GTi and a glanza,

i loved the gti a real drivers car. great to drive but the fact i was repairing it all the time would prevent me from ever getting another one.

Glanza is another option, good and diffrent

i would currently prob go for a 172 thou tbh

A GTi isn't far off a 172 in terms of straight line speed! But if you've got the cash, then go for the better all rounder which is clearly a 172. Better mpg than a GTi as well
