Im lookin at buying a new car and chap has sent me some pics. Seems harnesses are mounted to the rear strut brace. IIRC im sure this is illegal and dangerous?
Please confirm

think he said its welded in but dont think that makes any difference in a rear ender or side impact

Very unsafe. Not sure about the legalities, but I'd get them mounted to the rear setbelt points asap!

They're on the floor, there's no material from the belt looping round the brace

thats nowhere near as bad as the ones that you see fitted to them gash rear corsa strut braces that attah to the shocker tops.
id actually say thats no more dangerous than being fitted to the floor like normal.

Actually you can see white marks at the end of the belts, when he says welded he probably means he's welded in harness anchor points on the rear floor

It is dangerous and potentially lethal.
The shoulder belts should NEVER be mounted below horizontal. This is a requirement of type approval for cars. When you are in a front crash, as your body moves forward, the belt naturally tries to straighten out and will crush your shoulders. The belt holes in the seats aren't designed to give any support vertically, they are merely guides. So it is likely that the seat will be crushed and you too.
On my kitcar SVA test, the tester actually measured the angle of my belts using a crazy tool covered in spirit levels to ensure the belts met this requirement.
I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

so basically every single car that has harnesses on pretty much in the known world or cars that have harnesses is potentiialy lethal? as all cars ive ever seen with them have them mounted like so?

im sure it said in the original advert they were but cant find it now. but yeh looking now they look like there bolted to the floor. soz had a thick moment there. but atleast we can clear it up for future ref.
ste w - so what did ur tester say they should be mounted like?

The mounts should be at the same height as the shoulders of the person wearing them.

I always though more than 45 degrees from the floor was fine? Im sure ive read that in fitting instructions that come with harness'

most the rally cars ive seen theyre not. theyre done like everyone else does, to the floor. by rally cars i dont mean wrc, as ive not really looked at that many. i mean your average hill climb and tarmac event stuff.
