Hi All,
I am going to look at a Civic Type R 02 plate this weekend and just wondering if there is anything to look for on these due to it have 90k miles. What are peoples experiences with them also.
Please don't start with all the vtec cr4p either.
Thanks
Sam

They are pritty bullet proof just check for a crunchy gear change (most commonly second when cold)
Dodgy steering racks as these are pricy to replace (will pull to the left or right or make strange noises if its dying)
Have a look at the oil too, if its clean and topped up near the max thats a good thing. As they do like a sip of oil every now and again especially if driven hard. Running it low is a good way of putting uneeded wear on the engine/killing it.
Other then that just check for accident damage as its a common car to end up in hedges so HPI is a must and Good service history is always nice
Good luck, there are plenty of bargins about at the moment so dont pay over the odds and look at lots of em as there is lots of choice
there is a buyers guide on civictype-r.co.uk/forum too. Helpful and free

As pick4d said the power delivery is totally different. However standard for standard there is nothing in it in terms of speed.
I much prefer the civic to the astra as its more of a "drivers car" the gsi is more of a comfy cruiser with good grunt.
Give us a shout if you have any more questions

I'd say a standard CTR would spank a mk4 astra GSi.

just to add to what gavin said check the condition of the alloys and check the paintwork, the laquer was supposed to be quite thin from factory so the paintwork can chip easily and the alloys 'peel' and appear tatty

aye the paints pritty wank, mines chipped to fuck
Not had a problem with the alloys on mine. iirc its the older ones that were the problem and most were replaced on warrenty. But both of these things you will see when you veiw it easy enough

Not driven a CTR but i love my astra, as said its got a fair bit of grunt low down and hills dont bother it. If you got one take the OE DV off the rear BCS and run it off the FPR - Full boost in 1st + 2nd gear lots better

Just so the OP knows hills bothering a CTR is a complete myth before vtec its got just as much bhp and torque as any other 2.0 na engine

that doesnt matter, word on the street is hondas with vtec cant go up hills, FACT.
something to do with the anti vtec monster jumping on your car roof and making it alot heavier, the only cure is to fit a turbo as this sucks the monster into the engine.
oh and just how bad is your chipped paint? is it obvious to mr joe public walking by and is there anything you can do to keep it at bay?

its not really obvious to the naked eye. Just notice it when washing it etc. Very prone to swirls too.
