EDIT:::: If anyone works for Vauxhall please get in touch. You can earn some beer tokens for a little bit of paper from work
No, not about taking it on a date, I need to know its age.
I would prefer facts here, not guessing as this is super important.
I have to get my SVA paperwork in by Friday so the kitcar can get road registered. The problem is, the engine came from a Calibra and I only have a receipt, no V5 for it. I need to prove to VOSA that the engine is pre-95 for emmisions reasons.
The Cally was a '91 H reg but as I cannot prove the engine came from that car I need to do it from the engine number
I 'believe' that as the engine number is 20XE 11600498 this means it is a 20XE and not a c20xe which is older.
Can anyone shed some light, if so would a dealer write a headed letter to VOSA explaining this.

Cheers dudes.
EDIT: Added some pics to help.

I think you're right about the engine number, you could always borrow someones V5 from a car that would pass no problem.

c20xe means its a xe with a cat so the 20xe is an older unit

i am sure someone told me the year of the engine should be stamped on the camshaft caps, take the oil cap off and see if you can see it.

Take the oil cap off, and should be a circled 2 digit number when you look in through the oil cap
Mine was an 89 and used this as proof

It's stamped on the Vaux parts so yeah, I would imagine so. I can't imagine a dealer being helpful tbh.

Didnt they stop making the engine in 93/94 anyway???Or at least thats when the last calibras were registered so it could well be before that.

We've pretty much established that the engine doesn't need a cat but the SVA test needs proper proof of it, ie. not just Ste rolling up there and telling them he read it on the internet somewhere.

I have no way of knowing that it was the original one from the Calibra. For all i know it's original was fucked and replaced with this one. All i need to do is prove the engine was built pre '95.

It's probberly a c20xe engine then mate. Thats just a guess though because the 20xe engines only came in the gte 16v i thought. Look on the bell housing on the dipstick tube side & it will say 20xe then a number, or c20xe ect ect.

Can't you just find proof that it could only possibly come out of a GTE and then prove when the last GTE was made?

The engine number as stamped on the side, near the bell housing is 20XE 1104698
I'll try vaux today and see what they can do for me. They were useless last time i called though.
