Hi,
I was just wondering peoples opinions of the 206 GTI? I fancy a change and seen a couple in my price range with good mileage and condition.
I'd be looking at the 137bhp version? I have read on parkers they aren't blistering quick but would be stwp in the right direction from a 1.4 Sport?
Anyone own one on here?
Thanks

They won't set the world on fire, but they are good little cars
Little being the word i'd put some emphasis on, drivers and front seat passengers get plenty of room, back seat passengers not so, and the boot's aren't exactly huge.
Nicely spec'd as well, Climate Control, electric everything pretty much. Hardly a supr fast car but keeps up with 'most' hot hatches, i had a play with an XE Corsa just before i sold it and they were pretty much level-pegged.
They respond well to breather mods, the inlet manifold is massively restrictive, rumors fly about that with a decent exhaust system, TB's and a remap you are looking at 170-180bhp, not sure if thats confirmed or not though.
They look awesome fully colour coded, heres some pics of mine...

P.S - any comments about relaibilty shoudl be ignored, unless you buy a lemon of course, mine was thraped day in and out and it didn't fail on me once.

Cheers Phil.
Your 206 looks really smart, were the sp kits all optional from standard as i'd look for one with the mesh and arches as imo it makes them look even smarter.
Does breather mods i.e filter and exhaust system free them up a bit?

IIRC SP Kits were optional extra's yes, the previous owner of mine had the arches, mesh and rear spoiler added on after he bought it.

People slate french cars but mine gets a good pasting most days and still runs spot on.
Like any other car, there is wear and tear.

Yours is only a few years old. I would hope so, no matter what country it came out of

I had one for a few years, really liked it. They're pretty cheap to buy now, you get a lot for the money.

Agree with the above, wont set the world on fire but have a decent enough turn of speed. Mine gets an absolute hammering and still keeps going, just hit 100,000 miles, and done 40,000 in 3 years and it hasnt missed a beat, apart from the usual consumables like tyres, filters etc..
Only problems Ive had were a sticking rear caliper, I had the cambelt changed 2 years ago this feb, and Im about to replace the front and rear brake discs and pads and get 2 new tyres.
Ive got the electronic climate control and its on its way out, only seems to work when it wants nowadays, which is a pain in the current weather(steamed up windows), but other than that and needing a new battery its been an excellent car.
Im sure I remember it being ok on fuel if your gentle with it, but I cant honestly think of the last time I went easy on the car and went for decent mpg, being french I was surprised it keeps going with the amount of abuse thrown at it everytime the key is turned, as my phase 2 VTS was hopeless, but you do get your good and bad cars.

Cheers guys, i am really tempted at these now. Not looking for something blisteringly quick just something quicker than my 1.4 sport and these have the additional benefits of half leather etc.
I've had a quick look on Autotrader but many are already at 100k, should i stay away from these?
What are they like handling wise from standard?

Whats your budget?, I would look for one around the 50,000 mile mark just to be on the safe side. Mines on 100K but still drives fine, seems a bit sluggish compared to when I first got it but that could just be as Ive had it 3 years and am totally used to it.
Handling wise I find mine very good, great fun as well, as standard it has a bit of body roll, but I imagine lowered it would be superb, nice light back end which is typical on most french cars.
I used to have a 1.4 sport before I got my VTS, and the VTS is very similar in performance to the 206 GTi, and compared to a 1.4 sport its light years apart, cant even compare the 2.

Unfortunately my budget isn't the biggest and could probably push to around the £1500 mark.
Having a look on a 206 owners forum and there are some bargains to be had if you look in the right place. Do you know of any good 206 forums?
Cheers mate

Not beleiving for a second they are level pegged with an XE Corsa tho.
I tamed a 180 in my old XE,and they are a good bit quicker than the 137bhp Gti's.
