dad had one on a 3 day test drive and i used it a few times, with the 18's and 'sports' button on it handled actually very well and the engine had plenty of poke which offered impressive in gear acceleration and overall performance was good. easy to drive and comfy aswell, very good on fuel driven normally and good enough to not bother you when your thrashing it.
engine is much, much nicer and smoother than the 120bhp 8v version from vauxhall and people say its better than the 150bhp 1.9 vag lump aswell

Brilliant cars IMO, but, the rear windows on the 3 door are very small, rear vision is very restricted.
The 150 engine packs a punch (quicker than my car, but only only just).
Don't expect fast + mpg, it's either or, a common misconception people make with diesels - "Yey I can drive it hard and STILL get 50MPG".
Just to give you an idea, my car (similar size and engine) averages 40ish round town and anything from 47-60 on the motorway. My tank average is about 44-5MPG.
Tax is nice and cheap and the seats are very very comfy.

I have a black 08 SRi one for work.
It's pretty gutless and not as economical as you think. Perhaps the higher power ones are better.
Drivers seat is REALLY uncomfortable at first. So much so I swapped my old SXi back for my Golf again. Now i'm used to it which is weird so don't mind driving it.
Wheels are a bugger to keep free from scrapes, the spokes and outer rim sit out further from the tyre and they look shit once they are kerbed. Missus will have to be careful.
Sport Button? I thought it was just a button with an LED to look pretty. Nothing to shout about there.
In honesty I don't think i'd buy one.

I had a 5 door CDTI 150 XP in the silver. Great cars. Amazing engine. V Quick for a DERV. I would definatley consider a 5 door with the XP because imo it looks better than the 3 door with XP.

Strange! I owned one for 3 years and can say that I completley disagree with everything you said!
As for the sport button, mine made quite a difference especially after I had a tuning box fitted.

Mine isn't a 150. Like I said, I expect that they are a lot better.
Colleague has exactly the same car which is an Estate and has the XP. Much better to drive.
I'm gonna kick myself for saying this. But I'd be test driving a similar golf if I was spending that much money myself.
+ How could I forget the indicators. Which genius at Vauxhall came up with that wonderous idea?

Do you not think its handy though, if you are on a motorway for example and just pulling out to overtake, you can just flick the stalk and it flashes three times job done?

My Golf does exactly the same 3-flash thing - its brilliantly simple but clever idea.

Golf does the same.
Sometimes the Astra stays on. Then have to go through the Right, Left, Right, Left rigmoral before they turn back off.

Its not the three flash thing (I wish my Ibiza did that!). Its the way it doesn't "stay on" like other stalks. You dont know if your coming or going with it!
