My little sister is going to start driving soon, wanted to get her a car but no sure what is best in terms of performance/ insurance.

As a derv fan i thought a nice 1.5td as after a while the power can easily be boost but as standard they arent that fast, i couldnt lower myself enough to get her a 12volt so if it were petrol id be wanting atleast a 1.4 (8v mpi)

Discuss......

1litre 12v is better than the 1.2 imo but 1.4 is a good idea as you can actually pull away at round abouts etc

1.4 16v Sport.

For some god awful reason, im the same price for a 1.0 12v that I am for a 1.4 16v sport in the insurance stakes.

Quite a common thing on them from my experience, and the TPS.

Go for a 1.2 16v, as said there pretty good and sounds ideal for what you want. The 1.0 12v is horrible.

SXI's come with leccy heated mirrors, manual windows, c/l

Great little cars, quite nippy, good on fuel.
Yeah they have the odd sensor that fucks up, but they are easy enough to look after

The 1.2 16v is a sound little engine, I've had mine for a bit over 3 years, needed an AFM earlier this year but other than that it's been fine. AFM cost me £100, genuine part from AutoVaux

SXi'd be spot on, it's what I went for, alloys, spoiler and sport interior as standard. All have central locking iirc, electric windows were optional so some don't have them, mine hasn't but it's only ever bothered me since I got harnesses cos it isn't just a case of leaning over to open/close the passenger side anymore

guess im a little concerned the 1.2 will be very under powered compared to a 1.4 which sounds more livable. what models on the 1.4 come with everything aside from the GLS/ CDX models not to worried about alloys are will probably end up being replaced anyway

There probably isnt any notable difference between a 1.2 16v and a 1.4 8v SPi. You would need to go for a MPi 8v or the 16v sport to really notice a difference.

1.2 isn't under powered, I had one for years. Was fine, kept up on motorways. Don't forget it's her first car so there's no need for anything too quick.

1.2 16v and 1.4 8v have very similar stats iirc. My 1.2 got rolling roaded at 79.4 bhp pretty much standard, quite a few people have said they are nippy for a 1.2, mine started to annoy me a while ago but then it would when I've had it 3 years and have plans for an XE that I just can't afford

TBF i dont think there is much difference between a 1.4 8v and a 1.2 16v

I drive a 1.2 16v, no problems, i've had it for a year, and had a VTR in the summer which i bought to sell on, and TBH the corsa wasnt a great deal slower.

1.2 16v - nearly 80 bhp thats not to bad was just assuming they were like 60 bhp, i know we arent talking majorly powerful engines just i dont want her driving something stupidly slow

The only upgrade i was planning would be 256mm front brakes

I had a 1.2 16v and I would recommend one for a 1st car. I put the 256mm brakes on it and it stopped extremely well!

It did have a habit of needing various engine sensors replacing though
