A mate bought a golf at the weekend and has since discovered that its been a Cat D write off (un-economical to repair). The seller (private) didn't say anything about it being a write off, is there something against this? Do you have to tell the buyer its a write off?

People wouldn't get HPI checks if it always said on the logbook would they?

Seller isn't legally obliged to tell you, not really anything you can do.

They are if they are aware of it. They might never have known it was a Cat D...

Do they have to tell you if you don't ask?

You could check when it was wrote off, check if who you had it off was the owner at the time. If so then take it back

If not then it would appear that you cant do much

From what I can see the same holds for saying it's a write off as anything else in regards to the car.

You don't have to tell a buyer but have to answer truthfully if asked.

It does matter as it isn't worth what it would be if it wasn't a cat d.

All the report says is it's not a ringer, nothing at all to do with quality of repair or safety.

Does your mate realise that a CAT D car is worth about 33% less than the same car that is HPi clear?

How much did me pay?

Apparently although it doesn't cost anything different to insure they won't pay out as much if you crash it.

Some insurers wont cover a previously written off car.

Swift small print says they dont cover write offs. I guarantee they dont check this though as i didnt realise until 8 months into my policy on a CAT D vectra. ooops

He didn't know and bought it for about 5-700 more than what other Cat D's are going for. Insurance for us young 'uns is more on write offs

If the car has been repaired properly, does it really matter? Also, the seller may have not known.

At the end of the day, what's done is done. He should have done a HPi check there and then, or one of them £3 SMS jobbies.

The main this it that a CAT D isn't generally structurally damaging, so the car is safe in that respect.

Just a bummer it has been crashed and is worth less, plus the insurance issues.

I wouldn't worry about my safety in driving a CAT D car.

The only bummer here is what he paid. The car Cat D doesn't make it unsafe to drive.

It must have looked fine for him not to notice.
