Been searching for a new car for ages and have narrowed it down to the following:
a E46 BMW M3 - e.g. http://pistonheads.com/sales/483658.htm

or
a Nissan 350Z - e.g. http://pistonheads.com/sales/752349.htm

I'd prefer the look of the M3 but am worried about reliability and running costs compared to the Nissan. The Nissan is a couple of years newer and lower mileage and Japs have a got reputation for reliability. Any input would be great - cheers.

I wouldn't buy an M3 with tinted windows, I'd be suspicious of the previous owner's "profession"
Drive both, pick the one you prefer, if it's the M3, find one without tinted windows.

Never driven an M3, 350Z is a fine car though. I would imagine the M3 is much better interior wise, the 350Z feels kind of cheap.

Why? You know Tints where an optional extra? Granted.. not as dark as that, but still.

Both good cars. What would I buy again if I had a choice?
M3. Much better car IMHO. The 350z is good, the handling is probably better, the M3 can be a little twitchy and uncomfortable on certain roads, but the M3 engine is better, more responsive, nicer sounding and the interior is streets ahead and it ain't a Nissan!
The 350z was probably a little more reliable (honestly), although the engine felt a bit sluggish and didn't really like being revved hard, cheaper to run/insure etc.
Both good cars though whatever you decide to go for..

I'd pick the M3. But not in a plain silver.

Wonder what the outcome of this thread would be if it was between a CTR and an E46 M3
But anyway,M3 gets my vote.

Not at all, could have bought any colour combo I wanted just think Silver suits the M3 very well Gun metal with the red leather is nice though.
