Just been posed this question by one of my support team at work, he's looking at getting into trackdays on the cheap for now.
Said he would PREFER pre 2001 <1.5 because of the tax (£205 in a couple of years for a >1.5 )
Whats cheap to buy and run, needing minimum bits to make it a little fun, beginners track toy?
The only two things that come to mind are a 1.4 16v Corsa SRi or Sport with a powerbox OR a 1.4 XSi 106?
Anything else?

Saxo VTR and if you get a phase 2 the tax is £160 a year.
So easy to fix too and hardly anything to go wrong with it either.

XSi, but it won't be cheap to maintain. No track car is cheap to maintain, obviously some will be cheaper than than others but I wouldn't want to build a track car on the cheap with second hand parts.
For me, if I was to start all over again I would probably go for a 1.3 8v 106 Rallye or a Saxo VTR.

But the Rallye's hold a good value as well.
When I say cheap to maintain, I mean service parts etc are cheap, not skyline price.

Saxo Vtr then parts are cheap as chips and it all goes together like lego. Cheap insurance and cheap to tax. What else do you need?
Facelift are a 100bhp its basically a rallyee with electric windows and a carpet and a better quick rack IMO

Without me pulling up the bay and AT, how much so VTR's go for now?
Still, it shocks me how the tosser wants £205 to tax a 1.6 8v car.

no.
Seriously, the k11 (bubble) shape do well in the motorsport classes they enter, cheap as chips, dead easy to fix everything would need some off the shelf uprated suspension
