My cousin is going to look at one today as he's after something cheap and quick. Has seen a few for aroun 6-7K with about 50K on the clock. Am I right in thinking as its frech it will fall apart on him and cost a bomb if anything needs sorting, he's 22 so I reckon insurance will kill him.
opinions ?

I don't think modern day French cars have the same reputation. They seem to be built okay. Maybe with cheap materials, but maybe not in a model like the 225.
The only thing that would put me off the 225 would be the looks.
If he finds that insurance won't rape him too badly and he's flexible with money, get him to considder...

The 225 would probably be just as fast in a straight line, and obliterate it around the bends

CTR/172 are very similar speed. Megane is the new era of hot hatches.
Regardless, if I was spending 6 or 7k and I wanted something decent I would get a CTR, it will last forever and doesn't cost the earth to keep on the road.

Be different and go for the Megane.
Id have 1 over a CTR.
CTR has got to be the new Saxo.

Have to say I agree with Olly. No turbo lag, great reliable engine.
In that budget i'd have the same. The earlier 225's only had 222bhp (prob less now) and were the early versions.

problem with the megane is that bloody key card thing, we were out in my mates megan DCi and he threw it round a roundabout and the key card came out the slot ( he has loads of keyrings ) he stalled it at a set of lights a few miles further on and couldnt re-start it till he had found the key card from under his seat

The early 225's weren't all that good either, massively revised later on.
CTR new Saxo? So what? Both are very capable cars in the right hands.

Why follow the crowd tho.....
Im not saying id never have a CTR if given the chance.
But the guy is thinking about a Megane 225 so he clearly dosnt want a CTR.
These threads are all the same on CS these days.
"Thinking about a new car, opinions please"........Its always the CTR or 182 that gets mentioned.Folk are needing to start thinking outside the box.Id much rather have a Megane as theyr not as common and dont need thrashed to go anywhere.

You simply cannot dismiss how much of a bargain a CTR is, it has everything.
That silver UK one I saw at the 'Ring with a roll cage and was sitting on the floor was the turning point for me, oh and looking through Pistonheads classifieds and seeing exactly how cheap they are.
I really wouldn't spend 6k on a Megane 225, it will be a dog.

completly different. With the 225 you have more torque where as with ctr you have to rev the tits out of it all the time so you can hit v-tec yo

No they aint...the R25 was still a 4.5 star Evo.
All they didnt have was the diff and extra 5ps that the R26 has.
Plus the earlier Megane Trophy was a hooligan on track shame they are quite rare.

Yawn, even I suckled up to that old treacle.
They are a very involving drive, if you are a drivers driver you will love them.

This was in response to that kids remark about CTR's revving etc
