i know theres some Dj's on here, so was wondering if anyone could help me out?
im after some cheap yet good CD decks for xmas, but havent the foggeyest where to start?
Im a complete begginer (have done some mixing on some decks once or twice)
any help would be much appricated

you will struggle to get a good set for that price. May be a single deck! Are you including a mixer in this price?
Are you looking at table top cd decks or rack mount?
I think Gemini will be your best brand to aim for with that budget

Pioneers (usually CDJ1000s) tend to be what you find in clubs and because of that, they're still pretty expensive, even on ebay (£300-500 for 2nd hand deck). But have a look at Denon's DN-S1000s, similar spec apart from not having a spinning platter, but cheaper (i've seen a pair of DN-S1000s + Mixer go for £350 on ebay, infact theres a few on there now), and reviews edge towards them over the pioneers for better build quality.

something like tracktor/virtual dj - ie: mixing on your pc/mac.
Problem is, to make it portable you need a laptop and a soundcard that has 4 mono outputs (or a pair of stereo outputs). Can be pretty costly.....

CDJs and Virtual DJ software are great but if you want to get thrown into the deep end with beat matching then vinyl is the only way to go - cdjs and dj software all have tap tempo and you end up becoming reliant on things.

Virtual DJ Tutorial

Mash-up using Virtual DJ

Theres loads on youtube, ive been messing about with Virtual DJ for a few months now and getting really into it, ive made some good mixes, and mash-ups etc.

This can all be done with a mouse and keyboard, but im getting a DJ Console for Xmas which will amke life much easier!

Some people hate PCDJing but i think its a very good and easy way to get started, and tbh 90% of the pubs/clubs i go to, the DJ's use the same software

Only reason people fanboy the pioneers is because majority of clubs have them, certainly doesn't make the pioneers any better than denons - infact, i prefer the denons, feel a lot better built that pioneers i've played on.

But yes, you're probably right, the DN-S1000 are probably more comparable to the CDJ800s rather than the CDJ1000s, but the differences are minor unless you're one for spinning platters and effects the CDJ1000 has to offer.

I learnt to dj on a PC using Virtual Dj

Its good because you can actaully visualise the beats and matching them up is just the click of a button. It's good because see what you are trying to acheive by eye rather than ear. I now hate using a PC its really fake and using a keyboard and mouse is like wearing a straigh jacket.

Then once you understand how it works you should invest in some CDjs or decks and you will know exaclty what your listening for etc

Didgital mixing ftl. Djing is all about " turn tables " aka mixing the real way & not letting a pc do it for you. But out with the old & in with the new. The didgital era has taken over from vinyl

. IMO your only a dj if you use vinyl.

i agree, but tbh if your learning all the aspects of DJing, then Virtual DJ is defo the cheapest and easiest way of learning, id like to get into CDJ in the near future, but for what i want it for at the moment, Virtual DJ is more than sufficiant!

I know what you mean but DJing is more about entertaining and crowd pleasing, they couldn't really give two shits if u were on vinyl or cds as long as you keep it going! Love my technics still but wouldnt say cds were massively easier, just more portable and flexible.

I've been looking for a decent pc thing just so i can practise mixes with new tracks rather than having to burn them and fire up the decks. I'd defo recommend starting off with virtual to see if you can get the hang of it (and if ur any good) and then invest ur hard earned in something better

IMO djing is all about turntablism. Getting a feel for the music through a needle. It's easy to hook up a lap top & mix with a push of a button, it may be easier & practical but you can't call yourself a dj by doing that. This is just my opinion.
