My Uncle heard on the grape vine that his Jag (which was looking to be a £455 a year for window rent) wouldn't be much more than £200?

Looked on Parkers and it says that his car will now cost £245 to tax...

Seems like up to 2006 that the tax bands have been reduced?

When did this happen?

"Exemption for older cars (those registered between March 1 2001 and March 23 2006) will run until 2011, but there is a question mark over what happens after this date. Some owners (or potential owners) could find themselves in the same position as they are now - having to pay a substantial increase in Road Tax - in 24 months time."

See if he makes the increases then

Probably will. tbh if it gets some silly engined cars / school run 4x4s off the road then it will have been a worthwhile excercise! Nobody really needs a day to day car larger than band K (225 g/kg C02)!!

What the government don't seem to grasp, is those people which have 4x4's such as X5's, Range Rovers, or non 4x4 but still 'gas-guzzling' etc aren't operating to a tight budget. Which means, £200 extra over 1 year won't make much difference to their spending habits.

Very true, tbh im just having a moan at ball sacks in 4L Jag's that have them just because they can, not because they need them & mums in 4x4's becuas ethey like to sit higher up & are deluded its safer for the kids!!

If your going to get a gas guzzler then at least get a decent one

I still think that Road tax should be put on fuel....that way people pay proportionally to the amount they use the road, not on how much they could potentially pollute!!

I agree although could be problematic in terms working it out in figures.

Something could be done at MOT time, whereby the mileage is checked at car tax paid relative to that, almost like a prepay PAYG scheme. That way, those road users which actually ruin the tarmac and use street lamps the most, pay for it etc.

It wouldnt be too difficult, add a couple pence onto the cost of a litre.

That way you get charged for what you use which will also reflect on how ecconomical your car is.

Simple really, it couldnt be much simpler.

If you do 4000 miles a year in a diesel then you should pay around £80.

If you drive up & down the country daily as a sales rep then your road tax should reflect it - 50k miles a year I dont see anything wrong with 1000 road tax.

You pay for what you use - its fair!!

Very true.

And I don't think people would mind paying 'high' road tax, if they saw 'fruits of their labour' i.e. perfect roads, well lit areas, no delays. Because we are essentially paying something for nothing, it seems bad.

That's because it was in line with the VAT reduction, therefore, was no difference to notice
