I know theres afair few owners and BMW boffins in here so thought it was worth asking..

I'm buying an E36 328 Touring from London so could do with knowing what there common issues are as I've never had one before.. Its got the full M-Tec kit fitted from factory and looks to be in very good condition from the pictures I have.

If it s aheap when I get down I want be buying it, plane ticket is only 40 quid..

Nikasil issue is the main problem.Check that its either had an engine block replacement or make sure it dosnt use any oil.It could literally go at any thime tho.Rust around the arches and tailgate is also a problem that the E36 suffers from.Just ask plenty questions 1st about anything u can think of.You got any pics of it??

looks good, hellrot like mine
the brake ducts seem to by there still, sometimes they fall off like mine
check the sunroof, the roof lining cover thing that goes over it so you don't see metal can become unstuck and jam further back in the roof when the sunroof goes back.
yours will be a nikosil unless it has been replaced, but check if it has a rough idle, if so don't buy.
check the brake lines, mine is the same age and needed all 4 corners.
check if asc and abs work.
slipping clutch as well, as they have clutch delay valves which actually wear the clutch faster.
shine a torch at the rear view mirror, at should go dark.
and listen to it when its cold, check when it needs serviced as well it has green lights that light up when the ignition is on.

Im not to sure of the details and the years that were affected but the 328 suffered from the Nikasali (not sure how its spelt) engine probs and engine's expired about 90K; they were all re-called so prob worth checking on that.

If is a M-tech should it not have the white and red rear lights and i thought they can with a spoiler?!

sand-eel he has told me it has rough tickover every once in a while, is this linked to the nikasil problem? Its just had a major service and 4 new tyres so cant be bad.

It has done 140k so I would expect that it would have shown the problems earlier in its life.

NovaGTE2, it was specced with the kit from new so maybe those bits werent added.

once in a while... should be ok then as it should be rough all the time because the bores wear away.
the car has an m3 lower grill mesh and splitter, someone must have put them on but the mtech bumper is prob standard.
has it got an obc with check control?

if its been changed to an alusil block, there should be a metal tag on the block next to the starter motor.

mtech and m3 bumpers are the same apart from m3 bumpers have the m3 lower mesh and sometimes have a front splitter, not always.

Make sure you get proof of it being an alusil block as if its stil a nikalsil, DO NOT TOUCH.

Overall looks very tidy, just check the obvious things, Bushes go alot as mentioned, milege shouldnt be and issue as im sure you know as long as wel serviced these engine go for ever.

Rear trailing arm bushes are a point to look for too, listen for knocks from the back end.

Yeah look down from the passenger side to where the gearbox joins the engine block and youl see a brown metal tag if its an alusil block.Dont worry if its not tho.Not all nikasil blocks are bad.My dads sport is around 140K and it has the nikasil block with no problems at all.

Rear lights are standard.Only the later P reg and on came with the clear/red.Front bumper is genuine Mtech with the added splitter and mesh.

Hes orwarding me pictures of the documents relating to the block so I will have a bit of piece of mind. Rear bushes arent a huge issue, if there gone I'll just polybush it. Would be leaving it bodywork wise, stick some nice 18s on it and lower it.. Bit different to see a modded touring..
