Phone DVLA - they will tell you which form and the fee payable.

I was told recently though that it can take up to 6 weeks to transfer

£100 odd quid retention fee

You need to transfer it onto another vehicle for the cut price transfer fee

Put the plate on retention now, its much easier than messing about later.

I think its £105 now (£80 transfer fee + £25 retention fee).

They are much quicker to process stuff at the moment as the sale of new cars has dropped right off.

Oh and you can do it over the counter, but they retain the V5C until its all gone through.. So unless the person you are selling the car to is 'understanding' there will be a delay.

As above the car has to have MOT + TAX .. Plus you'll have to pay ANOTHER £80 when you move it again.. So why not pay the extra £25 to put it on retention and move it onto a car when you are ready?

DVLA are cunts tried to put plate on pickup get everything sent back as grantee and owner dont match so send it all back with £25 cheque to add nominee. get it sent back again and tld to wait until i get new retention document before they will transfer it

retention runs out on the 5th dec so more than likely going to cost another £25

what a waste of money

People try and be tight and avoid the retention fee; unless you've got a car ready to put the plate on for the long term you wont save a penny

We took jades off about 3 weeks ago, it took a week from going into the dvla office to getting the V5 sent back on the original plate. Put it back on yesterday & it was done over the counter, new tax disk issued there & then & new V5 will be sent in the post again.

Cost is £105 & that includes retention on certificate for 12 months.

IF you hold both V5's in your name you can transfer direct from one vehicle to another for £80. But I dont suppose many people will be able to do that.

Oh & whether they do it over the counter depends entirly on how busy they are & each office will be under different instruction depending on work load.

Im selling my plate at the moment too. If i paid the £105 retention fee so i can scrap the corsa, would the new buyer have to pay £80 transfer fee or would I just give them the certificate and they can sort it out themselves from there?

If you take it to the counter all they will do is make sure you have all the correct stuff for the transfer or retention. This saves you posting it and having it sent back because you've done something wrong.

If you have the plate on retention and take it to the counter the DVLA can do the transfer to your chosen car there and then.

Once it's on retention it won't cost anyone to re-assign it to a car of their choice. The £105 retention fee is the £80 transfer fee and £25 fee to retain the plate off the car for 12 months

Cool, I may as well stick it on retention now then for the sake of the extra £25, then I can scrap the corsa and just sell the plate whenever i find a buyer
