I'm looking for a new car as i'm bored with the pug. Test drove a 1.6 Astra tonight at Carcraft but was an automatic. Was loverly to drive too! Not getting a car from there as they offered me £3200 for an 07 plate 307. Motorpoint offered me twice that! However, love the idea of having an automatic as driving 100 - 700 miles a day, everyday means i'm rough as fuck on the gearbox and clutch.

What are automatics like day in and day out? Am i going to get just as pissed off driving one up and down the motorways in traffic?

If you do alot of miles, mainly motorway they are pretty good.

I had to use my mums care a couple of weeks ago to go to Manchester. On the motorway it was heaven compared to my car. Soooo easy!

I was driving one for a week or two, a 2.4 litre volvo, it took a bit getting used too but i actually enjoyed driving it, but a couple of people I know with them get bored with them.

Id only have a Auto if it had a bit of ooomph - merc CL500 or something!

Think it would just be a crap drive in a 1.6 or similar small engined car.

If you drive the motorway mostly then you wont be changing gear much anyway, something 6sd box & cruise control for the motorway ftw....not an auto!!

Depends Colingus, if your motorway mainly consists of traffic jammed motorways they are ideal.

Don't want to spend the cash and then hate it or it be awful on fuel.

Needs to have enough ooomph for overtaking. Guy was going on about power down but then he wants a sale.

Automatic is cool but only a big engine me thinks, as it strangles alot of the power!

Can't imagine the 1.6 petrol would be too good for you?!

An automatic on that style of the car is just a no thrills get from A to B type driving experience. Handy for traffic jams and such though.

Did they not make a 1.7/1.9CDTi auto?

I think it's perfect. Not too expensive, right size and doesn't look like my Dads cars

Will go motorpoint tomorrow evening and test drive one of the 5 doors they have in

I always hated the thought of an auto but then I set my mind on an RS6.............and later found out I didnt have a choice!

Its got the flappy paddles but the only time I really use them is when Im overtaking so I can hold it in a gear, other than that full auto all the way! Love it now!!!

Driven quite a few Auto Beemers and love them.

Although in your case I think you'll probably cry that they do less MPG than the equivilant manaual.

The auto in dad's E39 530i Sport was great. Sequential type mode was a bit rubbish, but the kick down in fully auto was awesome

I don't think I'd get a 1.6 auto. All the autos I've driven have had V8's or V6's and have been quite nice to drive on the motorway.

Is the Vauxhall auto box a 4 speed, or have they done something decent with it now?

My girlfriends mum has a Chevvy Lacetti estate 1.8 with a 4 speed Auto - I thought they stopped making 4 speed autos when they realised a circle was the best shape for a wheel.

That will more than likely mean that the Astra has a 4 speed. It will munch fuel and will probably not be that nice to drive in reality...
