Speed cameras which can track drivers for up to 30 miles are to be deployed on roads next year.

---

Trials of the new speed cameras have been concluded successfully in London.

The device is to stop motorists dodging tickets by braking suddenly before a camera and speeding up immediately afterwards.

The cameras will work together in a network, and can be positioned more than 15 miles apart, automatically reading numberplates and transmit data instantly to a penalty processing centre.
Existing average-speed cameras can only cover a maximum of six miles, and are costly and difficult to set up as they have to be connected directly by a cable.

Trials of the new cameras have been concluded successfully in London and a second set of trials are set to finish in Northern Ireland.
The Home Office is expected to approve the technology by the end of January and the first fines are likely to be issued next summer.

Transport minister Jim Fitzpatrick told a road safety conference on Wednesday that the latest cameras would be key in reducing road casualties.

He said: "When the Home Office approves the equipment, I think there will be great interest among the safety-camera partnerships. They will give a more sophisticated edge to cameras than the blunt instrument we have at the moment."

He added: "Trials have shown very good results. Wherever there are average speed camera signs, traffic moves at a uniform speed and crashes reduce."

On the M1 the number of casualties halved after average-speed cameras were introduced on a contraflow between junctions 6a and 10.

The new cameras, known as Specs3, will cost typically £300,000 per network and are likely to be deployed first on long rural A roads, where crashes occur frequently.

Brian Gregory, from the Association of British Drivers, who campaign against speed cameras, said: "People put the car in cruise control and the mind in neutral. It's so boring driving through these sections at a constant slow speed that people are going to drop off."

might aswell trade the st in now then, tossers

i'm not ''pro speeding'' as such by the way, but some times it's safe to travel higher than the speed limit and where i've seen before, it's sometimes MORE SAFE to actually increase your speed over the limit to keep with the flow of traffic.

Yeah as if.

The only place they'll be employed is on motorways, which, tbh, isn't a bad thing.

FFS

Time to start driving around with no numberplates then tbh!

I don't condone speeding, but it pisses me off with the need to do this. Average speed cameras annoy me - although I have to admit they are bloody effective!

What I don't understand though is how some people seem to manage to sail through them still and yet don't get caught?!

rich, i actually believe average speed camera are dangerous.

from what i've seen, a lot of people tailgate at 70mph through these whereas if you're sitting at 80-90mph with no cameras, people tend to give you much more space.

it scares me when i enter the averge speed camera zones simply because i know i'll have a lorry or car up my rear.

Sounds pretty shit tbh.

I think CorsAsh said in Germany there are less accidents and less speed cameras. This goes hand in hand because people are concentrating on speeding/driving and not their speedo worrying if they've been caught.

Yeh I've heard that, and been tempted to try it

I tend to have my TomTom on when I'm going through those so I can use that speedo rather than my car / van one, but am surprised at how many people still manage to speed past me.

And Ben - Yeh tbh I agree with you mate - I get so pissed off with people who sit up my backside till I can move over for them to speed by

All cars these days are easily capable of higher speeds than 70, so why not raise the limit a bit and see what happens then - I feel that Germany etc where higher speeds are allowed are safer. Granted though, our roads also need to be improved to allow this tbh.

It's been 70 since the motorways were introduced something like 40 odd years ago. Back then 70 was a land speed record so it should be higher nowadays, seeing as you can do that with ease, even in something with 3/4 of an engine.

Well... relative ease.

I dont think those average speed cameras are on and working every day. My bro-in-law got a speeding ticket from the ones on the M1 last week, he'd been working away, and done the route everyday, for the full week. He didnt realise it was average cameras, thought it was just normal speed cameras, so sped up, then slowed to 50mph for the camera, and he got caught for one day, not all 6 days that he did it

And you guessed it, a SATURDAY!!!

They'd be better off spending that money on more Traffic bobby's who can also deal with disqualified, uninsured and unlicenced drivers who are far more dangerous than speeding drivers. Everyone might hate Traffic Cops but at least they do have discretion and aren't a one trick pony.
