I don't get this!?

People seem to think is stupid to put on winter wheels and believe that the rest of Europe do it by law.

The fact is, that only germany have regulations regarding winter tyres, yet still in almost every country in Europe, except the UK, people change their tyres when the temperatures drop.

So, why don't you?

I believe it's regulation in Slovakia too

We don't because 1) we never have really adverse weather, and when we do, you can't drive anywhere 2) our insurance industry is one of the biggest contributors to our economy

Yeah, but winter tyres have nothing to do with snow!? The only tyres that work in snow/on ice are spiked tyres, and theire illegal in most parts of europe.

Regular tyres (even, and perhaps especially, the more expensive ones) are designed to work with a certain temeperature. When the temeperature drops below 8 degrees celcious regular roadtyres loose their grip as they harden.

I never notice a difference really, have to admit.

If i'm driving on a cold dry afternoon and it isn't icy the car still grips the same.

The only reason I ask this is, that most people on here seem to be very focused on safety.
Yet still people get laughed at for wanting to change from their F1's (or whatever), that they were recommended on here because of their superior grip, to a pair of winter tyres.

You should just run some cheap Nankangs in the summer then. No reason to have superior grip half the time. Might aswell save som money and have the same grip all year round!

We have 4 Continental Conti-Winter Contact tyres here in size 235/45/r17. somebody had them fitted to their company car when they went to germany in winter last year and then took them off when they got back. no idea who they belong to but there is a shit load of tread left on them. how much are they worth?

It doesn't snow enough here to justify buying or using winter tyres...
