You will not get a shark in fresh water.
You will not get a shark in a 4ft salt water tank.
Piranhas are ugly?...

They look and act nothing like sharks though - and wouldnt be interesting at any time (seems you're so concerned about P's only being interested when eating).

I have slowly converted the stock in my tank...I now have:
1 RTBS
1 Pictus Catfish
6 Silver Dollars
2 Blue Acara's
2 Firemouths
Conventions say the new world cichlids and the RTBS shouldnt get on...but they do...and have done for a while...the RTBS is bigger than the cichlids though...
I want another tank though when I move house next year...it wont be a display tank...would love a huge shoal of RBPs...

Go with Piraya - like RBPs but yellow (pic I posted above), keep their colour when they are large and a much bigger in size.

How much bigger? It's the shoaling that I like and with a bigger fish the shoal would have to be smaller?

Not bigger in length (well, they do get bigger in length but you're talking 5+ yrs down the line). I more mean wider, bigger jaws, bigger head on them.
They say approx 20gal per Piranha, but you can overstock this depending on the filtration and tank set up.
