We had a 1.9 TDI, was a brilliant car, cant really fault them, they are expensive for parts, the only problem we had was suspension drop links ect going, down to the age of the car really.

some one i know sell them and says they are good! rarely go wrong.. although if u buy an auto, check that reverse works everytime(drive in reverse few times) as it expensive to fix if doesnt work.

Remember that the 1.8 turbos are prone to overheating, water pumps are the killer's.

Passat/A4 are the same car regardless of what you buy. Same chassis + engine, and all VW parts fit in the Audi (as I realised when my wiper motor packed in).
It depends what you want it for, but I have a 1.9 TDi (110bhp) and its been remapped to 130bhp and its absolutely spot on for what I need it for - which is mainly a 40 mile motorway journey everyday. I know you could get a petrol for that low amount of miles, but when the trip says 80mpg, I aint complaining
In terms of parts and stuff like that, as said they're expensive because of the name - but don't be fooled into servicing the car at Audi, because from my own personal experience, VW do the job for less, and use the EXACT same parts. Common problems with A4's are that often the CV joints get worn out and need replacing, and sometimes the drain-hole under the battery gets clogged meaning the battery compartment gets flooded with water. The latter can be fixed in about 20 minutes by removing the battery and cleaning out the hole.
No other problems with mine so far, and I've done over 17,000 miles in it since I had it.
