The advert looked really interesting, here's the synopsis from YahooTV.
quote:
Everyone knows that an iceberg sank The Unsinkable Titanic leaving more than 1,500 people to perish in what is now known to be one of the greatest maritime disasters in history. But this striking new film argues that it was actually a long chain of misjudgements, human errors and misfortunes that sealed the fate of the largest liner of its day, her passengers and crew.

Titanics sister ship the Olympic smashed into HMS Hawke, White Star Line were suffering massive losses at the time and couldn't afford to fix the Olympic so they switched the Olympic for Titanic.
"The theory holds that severe, crippling damage to the Olympic caused by her collision with the Hawke was concealed because she was too costly to repair. The White Star Line was unable to recover the cost of repairs from the Admiralty as the judgement of the court ordered that both partys pay there own damages. With a considerable loss in revenue, compiled with an insurance deductible of some $750,000, White Star switched the Olympic with her almost identical sister Titanic. On the morning of April 15th 1912, the Olympic was deliberately sunk AS the Titanic, for which insurance claims would be paid"

I heard another tale!
I heard that the Titanic has been docked for years and it was the Olympic that sank yet the Titanic sounds better

There were 3, Olympic, Brittanic and Titanic, all essentially the same ship, with slight differences.
The Olympic and Titanic were in dry dock at the same time, easy to change a name over and swap some plates
There's stories about the windows being different and the "Titanic" footage you see always has the name covered up on the ship.
The program wil probably tell you all of this

Good evening Oliver So nice to have you back on board sir. No punn intended.
I have heard this theory before and it has always greatly intigued me. It sounds alarmingly feasible.

I think it was more to do with the failure of wrought iron rivets that held the thing together

Me too. I think people at personnel level, i.e. the guys in the crows nest or comms room weren't to blame - it's more higher up, like the WSL etc.
tbh, there were 2 tragedies that can be discussed and parts blamed for. 1) the actual thing sinking (rivets) 2) So many people dying (life boat situation).
