are you telling me a car with 130ft-lbf and 180bhp for example would be quicker than something with 405.7 lb-ft and 154bhp.....

theres more to it than just torque

*not aimed at deano by the way"

Depends on the circuit. One with lots of tight corners will be great for a torquey car, long straights and high speeds will be the bhp car's strength.

And then of course, you have the drivers.

Not to mention gearing in your examples. Not a fair comparison.

Slightly off topic... what would happen if you put a smaller rear wheel on the rear off a tractor?

Doesn't BHP count for off the line, and torque count for when moving i.e. they say a 1.6TDCi Zetec S Fiesta is a better drive on the motorway than a 2.0 ST.

Fiesta St`s are do-able in my car, the ford has 150 brake and mine has 130 i think its a safe bet the Fiesta is lighter too

diesels dont work off the lights because of the small rev range

Engine Speed.

BHP = Torque x RPM / 5252

I would say that would be down to the TDCi feeling faster due to the punchy turbo.

It'll be because the diesel sits at low revs crusing along the motorway and thepetrol probably doesn't as opposed to being faster.
