How does this work, when you have a different engine in your car? Do you have to tell them you have or this not a problem? Wouldnt want them to come out and then go because of this? Cheers

When I was with the RAC the cover is for YOU. Its not tied down to a car.
Therefore if I'm out with my mate in his car, and we break down we can use my RAC cover as I'm stuck too

Thats not 100% true, the AA guys can choose if they get paid by the hour or if they get paid by how many recoveries they do, they dont have normal working hours. so some guys work night and some work days, the only time they send a 3rd party recovery is if they have noone in the area or they know they wont be able to fix the car, i.e blown up engine.

They do sub-contractors but again mainly for the larger vehicles eg caravans and so on as the AA Doesn't accomadate for those long vehicles but can accomadate any car eg jeep, and so on just if the membership is with you personally, doesn't matter if the car has been modified as long as you let them know there and then so they can arrange sumin eg special equipment.
And the vehicle based membership i would recommend letting them know about any changes in colour etc just incase.

This is true. I'm covered by the RAC and if I was out in a mates car and it broke down I can phone them to come to us. Pretty handy.

read the whole thread, i was with the aa, and cause the whole family are with the aa we all got a letter saying they had set hours as stated already before, after that time it would be a sub company contracted with them, friends rover 75 brecks down at 1pm, took hours for the sub company to come out, that wasnt the only time, its happened before during the day

Think it generally depends how many AA guys are on duty etc and perhaps sometimes it's quicker to just get someone to recover you than wait for an AA guy to come and then say we gota recover you? I don't know, all i've ever had was "Bob's recovery" from down road meaning what ever company was closest to me at the time! So never had any experience with a named brand before!

rac are good, when the gfs focus didnt start, and she didnt have home start, pushed it round the corner, rang them up, they said be there in 45 mins, 30 mins later hes there, he knew we pushed it round the corner, and was fine with it, got it started..compared to the aa, my mate crashed into a tree, rang the aa and to be recovered, they came along, picked it up, took it to the nearest garage (less than half a mile away), dumped him there, but the thing was the garage is a little garage and doesnt do body repairs, his front wheel was pushed back in to the wheel arch and the driver shaft hanging out, but now it was 8am, and he had crashed 5.20am and was late for work, he had to move the car out of the garage as they couldnt do anything and he reversed back to the otherside of the vilage, pretty much where he had crashed to get his mums car has he was late for work..aa are shit lol

so if a contractor came out for the AA do they still have to tow you home no matter how far you are away from home?

It's your mates fault for calling the AA when he crashed. They are breakdown recovery, not crash recovery.

A contractor will operate under the same terms as the AA/RAC. It also depends on the nature of the breakdown. If you tell them it's something unrepairable i.e. engine just blown up they'll often send a contractors flat bed as they AA don't have a huge amount of these.
