Im looking for a Kawasaki KX 250 only a few on eBay and they are either non running heaps or 2007 modles that are £2k +
Ideally want a late 90`s one that I can get for under a grand
what problems do they have, obviously beeing a high revving 2 stroke the pisons and rings need changing regulaly?

the kx 250 is a fast bike, as you said they are high revving engines and all will have been thrashed, racers change the piston and rings every meet!!!
personally if you can afford it, go for a cr 250 2 stroke. most common problem is seizure which you will encounter some time while you own one

^^ i dont know anybody that changes the piston and rings every meet, usually every 10 hours is a safe bet.
does it have to be a 2stroke? what about a 250f?

My brother has a yamaha yz125, the things a monster and he hasnt had any problems yet, other than spark plugs.
He manage to get an 02 one for under a grand somehow as its worth much more.

there are 2 on ebay that have been used for racing and they say the piston and rings have been changed every meet
want a 2 stroke Ideally, its only for green laning with 2 mates 
Seen one in Leeds for £900

ah ryt fair play.
yea a 250 2 stroke would murder a 250f, but they wont be racing in the same class anyway, e.g. if your racing AMCA the 250 2stroke would be racing 450 4 strokes in mx2
and the 125 2strokes would be racing 250 4strokes in mx 1

It isnt worth much more TBH, you can pick up an 03 yz125 for a grand now adays.

Bikes prices have dropped stupidly over the years as young kids want brand new bikes becuase they think they will be faster on them.

Alot of these bikes need ring, pistonsetc because people put cheap oil in them and rag them from cold.
key to keep a 2stroke going.....let it tick over for a minute will you get your gear on, then ride it sensible at low revs for a couple more and they are sound.
I did this with my 50 and it were still going strong over 17k later and in that time it had bigger carbs on it and everything. And it were rapped to fuck....everywhere ful throttle!
Thats all i did with mine ands it were sound...

Thats about all the CR has is build quality and handling, but the motor on modern day 2 stroke hondas are quite poor. Having owned a 2005 CR 125R (identical to 06,07) the motor is very weak in terms of power compared to the others in the class, same in the 250 class.
I would go for a yamaha personally, best engines, superb handling and suspension, can you stretch your budget? have you ridden before? definately worth upping the budget as you will get a much better bike.
I currently have an 06 YZ 125 and its an awesome bike, but for around £1500 you can pick up an 05 Yamaha YZ 125, as from 05 all YZs had alloy frame, dont discount a 125 when looking for a bike, as fast as a 250 but lacks the torque of the bigger engine, so needs to be worked a lot harder.

im unsure about the 125's but i know the 426 isnt as good as the 450 at all and if we are talking power the the ktm's rule!!!!

The lad Il be out with Has a KTM 250 4 stroke of some kind
I juat fancy the Kx cause they look the buisness and are quite popular
if I get one the bike will be pampered, best oil not ragged and so on

Only problem with th 06/06 yams were the bearings on the swing arms. But seeing as it's a few years on now i should think most of the bikes have had them replaced.

kwackers are a good reliable bike, I've owned a few 125 and started racing on a 65, they trundle on for ever. ONly problem i ever found was that they were on the heavy side.

Yep I agree about swing arm bearings, seem to be constantly wearing on mine, but other than that its an amazing bike. The honda was a nice bike but hard work in harescrambles and enduros, had to put a vforce 3, hgs pipe, powerblade just to get the engine up to scratch.
KTM are also a good choice, very powerful motors and great ergonomics.

im unsure about the 125's but i know the 426 isnt as good as the 450 at all and if we are talking power the the ktm's rule!!!!
the 426 has been out of production for a long time, the yamaha yzf 450 is more than a match for the honda, all the bikes in that class are very close and it comes down to personal preference, Im a fan of the Suzuki RMZ 450 has electronic fuel injection

yep piece of piss, I used a wossner piston in my YZ 125 and cost me around £53, also bought a new small end bearing, which was an additional £3.00. takes around 30 mins to an hour to change the piston, depending how fast you are.

easy if you know how, but for what it costs nowadays for labour and that it's better to take it too a shop.
I remember i once changed the piston on my KTM, built it all back up, kicked her over and just heard the conrod smashing into the side of teh barrels.
Sor some odd reason i'd forgot to put in the piston.

2 stroke engines are soo easy if you have the tools, i change the piston and rings on a aprilia engine and they are not easy. the way a 2 stroke works is really simple

thats worse than me putting 3l of oil in the corsa with no sump plug
