Could have been a Tax Disc van perhaps.

It depends, they essentially have someone sat in the back with a speed gun with a camera attached. They are not automatic by any means, so in theory the operator can point the gun at either carriageway. However I have heard from a mate (who knows better than most ) that 25% of the evidence on the tapes gets thrown away because their staff simply can't process them fast enough to comply with the legal timeframe in which they have to notify you of the charge.

They usually get you coming toward them so they can get your face and two fingers!

Anyhting 30mph over the limit is automatically court... 75mph during the day(?) in a 40 seems excessive to me so I suspect the courts would not be happy

no they can only get you coming towards them. reason being is becsuse you have to be able to identify what the the vehicle is, which when approaching it from the front u cant

If it's one of the newer kitted van they can get you going away from them or at least your plate. They use it for bikes etc.. as many were speeding towards the van and there was nothing they could do. so a camera is now linked up to the front windscreen and can get your plate when you pass. I don't think it will be set up to actually measure your speed from the front though.
