I've just had a good phone call.........
I can have one of these, for free if I shift it
http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc110/ourclassiccars/Fraserburgh/P1020199.jpg
its a 1948 Alvis, its been stood in a garage for 5 years but up until then was used every day.
I'm going to look at it at 10.30 this morning and if its not dropping in bits,I might have a go at restoring it.
problem is I've also been told that parts for these are as rare as hens teeth
what do you think?

Mate has an Alvis, use and abuse it for hill climbs etc.
Bits are rare, but if you know where to look you will be fine.
Think his is a 1940'

I'd love a really old car to use everyday......I'm just on with restoring a 1929 ford model 'a' pick up, which I intend to use everyday!

Not the same style obviously but:

This is what my mate uses to do classic / vintage hill climbing / trials etc in, even if you could get it road worthy and do trials in it.
Amazing fun

I like that, I'm not thinking of trials though, I'm thinking everyday use, shopping, school run, work etc etc.
something different to the 'run of the mill' cars, something to be seen in

Get it, thats a proper cool car.
Cant see why parts would be hard to get ?
any fabricator can make parts up easy enough and join the alvis owners club.
One of my dads mates has a Wolseley Hornet Special, noone reproduses parts for it has them all specially made and its worth it in my opinion, classics are awesome.
Have more style and characther than any modern car imo.

i cant see you running a 1948 alvis, which prob used 6v electrics and many other parts, everyday, for normal tasks without it been untrustworthy

is a wolsely hornet not the same as a riley elf, which is infact a mini ?
fabrication of one of bits will be massive cost wise ?

well i've been to look.......I was miss informed about the 5 year storage
good points.........
car is complete with no bits missing at all!
would make a great car with some time and tlc.
all windows and lights are intact
too good to scrap (even though there are a few bad points)
bad points..........
not been moved since 1975 (year before i was born!)
seized brakes and engine
rust everywhere (surface rust, not rotten)
needs a full strip down and rebuild
I couldn't take pics as it was too dark in the garage and I don't know how to put the flash on (the wifes) camera.

Nah this is a Wolsley Hornet Special.

A wolsley hornet is the same as a riley elf but thats a hornet "special"
and my dads mate says getting parts fabricated costs as much as new off the shelf dealer parts,so exspensive yes but worth it imo.
He had to have a new manifold made up a while ago cost him £365.
