How expensive is it to get a train these days

Just looking at tickets for London for the 25th October, and its going to cost £87 per person, there is 4 of us going so thats £348

As if anyone is going to pay that, you can drive down & back for £50/£60 in petrol, make no wonder no cunt uses public transport

Rediculous isn't it.

Couple of mates of mine decided to go up to Edinburgh a few weeks back. Could fly for £99 each, or train for £300 each

Yip guys I work with used to train it back up & down the country at weekends to get home, then fucked it off in favour of one taking his car. They still get paid the same travel money but now costs £50 instead of several hundred in the train!!

If you're 25 or under, go and get a young persons rail card. Saves you 1/3 off the price, so although you have to pay £24 for the card, it'll still work out marginally cheaper. If you go on any other train journeys, it will pay for itself quickly.

£42 from Kent to Leicester seems steep imo. Would much rather drive in the comfort of my own car, no other people about. As said its stupid how much trains cost if the government are trying to do all this carbon emissions and shit.

I'll be going from Huddersfield.

I've had cheap trains in the past, been from Leeds to London a few times for £20 return which is more like it, couldn't book that early though due to awaiting fixtures being released.

As already stated, i'd use the train more often if it was more resonably priced, but if its going to cost the same/more than driving, im in the car everytime.

Virgin last time I checked have stopped doing the value advanced tickets...

You used to be able to get a train from London to Liverpool for around £50 return with the value advanced providing you booked around 4 weeks in advance.

Doesnt look like they are doing it any more now!

apparently if you book your journey station by station, or at least into lots of small chunks along the route, the price comes down massively. You have loads of tickets to keep hold of, but you don;t even need to get off.

an old work colleague who i saw recently did this for his girlfriend from reading to cornwall or similar.
original ticket was circa £95, and doing this got the price down to about £30.
