I'm not sure that it is TBH, I reckon it's one of those urban myths. Tiger's Z100 ran 2 bike engines, Citroen sold a twin engined 2CV, BMC nearly sold a twin engined Mini, VW looked into twin engined Sciroccos....

I remember being told that whilst it's not illegal to have two engines in the car, it's not permitted to run them both at the same time.
I'll check up on it now...

Yeah, I heard it on Scrapheap, one of their cars was twin engined and they came out with that.
So it could be wrong, it's also possible it was changed with the advent of hybrids.

Beardy had mentioned it in several threads on here, it's legal as long as it's 1 at a time on the road.

Yeah, but that could be just what he's heard. I bet there's nothing in the MOT handbook to say it's not legal, and I'd be surprised if VOSA have a guideline against it either. I see no reason for it to be illegal, if it was done properly, like any other modification.

I doubt the government would want double engined cars on the roads for emmisions and for the fact they're dangerous?

But this 'law' has been around since long before the govt. was bothered by polar bears.
There's also no reason why it would be dangerous, they allow cars which have been converted to RWD, 4wd, built in a shed, had the engine moved from front to back or completely swapped for one with a ridiculous size.

it isnt illegal.
there are MOT/SVA rules about fire resistant bulkheads between the seated area and any engine bays and i think there are measurements to determine the distance from passengers to engines.
touchable hot bits and sharp edges would also be considered but it certainly isnt illegal.
