My Gramps was Wireless Operator in WWII, most of the missions he flew were in Lancaster Bombers.

He left me his Logbook and i've been searching out information on the planes he flew, I wondered why he didnt continue flying missions in specific planes after certain dates and found out that while he was assigned to different planes the others were shot down! He flew in some quite famous Lancasters including Bad Penny II and Phantom Of The Ruhr. I've got photos of him with his Squadron (550 Squadron) and got his medals framed too

Its really interesting reading up on the stuff he did, it makes you proud too of your family and their acheivements.

He is on here, but its hard to pinpoint him, I have a much better photo but its framed:

He flew on this Lancaster, 'Phantom Of The Ruhr' (EE-139):

He flew on this plane too - Bad Penny II (LL-811):

Anyone else know the history of their Grandparents in WWII?

Sounds fascinating mate

My grandad was in the army during the war but not entirely sure what he did. All I know is he was a truck driver so I assume he was in some kind of logistical role.

He travelled all over with the army and went to the likes of Africa and Egypt IIRC, met alot of characters too

Fuck off you dick, who cares? The german civilians didnt really give a fuck about the British soldiers there relatives were killing, so why should anyone give a fuck about them?

Thats very cool stuff mate! My grandad was a soldier in The Black Watch (famous scottish infantry regiment) during ww2. Ended up with my dad, my 2 uncles and then me following in his foot steps.

I dont think that statement is justifyable, I mean not all germans were nazi.

I wish I had grandparents from the war, I love hearing old war stories.

lol... put it on the flip side, and think about the German bombers killing all our civilians in the war. The Blitz purposely targetting civilian areas as targets.

These days a army couldn't purposely target civilians as targets as the media would throw a fit and hang it in public.

Just makes you think though back then, each side had the opinion that the other side 'was the enemy' and that they were all evil (civilians included)... however in hindsight it's all a bit stupid.

I'm sure German Civilians were just as innocent and decent as British Civilians at the time, unfortunately they had an evil dictator.

My grandfather drove for Montgomery in Africa and then operated behind enemy lines as he spoke perfect German and could gather information. Was at the end of the war when he met my grandmother over here.

Never went into specifics about what he did though.

My other Grandad was in the armed forces, he wouldnt talk a lot about what he did, he told us he was 'acquainted' with Churchill and De Havilland. My mum and Grandma suspected he could have had something to do with the Secret Service, he was involved lots in advancing technology like the very early aircraft carriers etc.

My grandfather was in the Scots Guards, he was a prison of war and was released after the war finished. He has a scar down his right cheek where a bullet narrowly missed him and took a bit of his ear. Both his brothers were killed, I know one of them was a Tank Commander for the South African Army, but he doesn't talk about it much though.

During the war. . .

On a more serious note, my Grandad came over from Germany during the war on the Kindertransport. He was about 15, so a bit young for the war, ish.

I think the grandad i knew was a gunner of some sort, not quite sure, would love it if he was still alive now, would love to ask him about it. Its crazy thinking about the war, My dad was 2 when it ended, such a strange thought, makes you think how different my life is to his.

Mine lied about his age & joined the army, won a few medals too. My great grandad did too, pretty sure he got an even higher commendation. Will have to quiz my dad about it next time I see him

my grandad was on the HMS Royal oak

At 0116hrs on 14 October 1939 the British Battleship Royal Oak was torpedoed whilst in the "protected" anchorage at Scapa Flow. She took 15 minutes to sink the 13 fathoms to the bottom, drowning 833 crew

my grandad got to safety, one of the lucky ones!
