Seriously thinging about getting rid of the corsa for something newer, Ive had corsas for 5 years since I was 17 and have loved them all but thinkits time for a change.

Whats really taken my fancy is a mk4 golf with an R32 kit

Now im looking for about 350BHP in the golf so have a few choices to make:

1) Get a GTi (about 4k) with an R32 kit and build up a new GTi engine (about 3-4k) to make the power I want. This would work out cheaper than getting an R32 but I would be stuck with 2WD

2) Get an R32 (about 10k) and start with that, probably do away with the V6 for a lighter 4 pot which i think would be easier to get 350BHP than tuning the V6. Again I would neeed to spend 3-4k on a GTi engine but I would be able to make some money back by selling the R32 engine. This way I would have 4wd which would reallly help with that level of power.

3) Get an R32 and tune it. Not really looked into this but would have thought its a non starter really, only way to make big power would be a supercharger or twin turbo which is likely to work out more than tuning a GTi engine

Does anyone know of anyone with a high power golf? Is there a 2L turbo engine I could start with rather than the 1.8 golf one? Im assuming a GTi engine will mate up with the R32 gearbox, does anyone have any info on this?

Going to sit and do some research on this tonight to get my head round it a bit more but any advice or opinions from you guys would be much appreciated

I just dont want to go for anything slower than the corsa and I know the golf is a heavier car. R32 has 240BHP and my corsa at the mo is 291BHP

Also love the sound of a big turbo spooling up over NA any day

Its cool if im missing something here and it would be easier to get that power from the R32 engine but I just couldnt see tuning the V6 to 350 BHP could be done cheaper than a single turbo 1.8-2L turbo engine to the same power. The general thought is keep the V6 then?

Where does this 350bhp figure come from? I'm going to put my neck out and say an R32 will probably be quicker than your more powerfull Corsa.

P.S. I don't care about how fast it is in a straight line. That's not really a true test of a cars performance.

Why not look past the golf and get an Audi S3??
Or if ur dead set on a 4wd turbo golf then get a 4motion v6 and chuck that engine.

And uv gotta remeber, the 4wd system (Haltec iirc) isnt a good system. Its FWD most of the time until it suspects wheelspin, then it puts power to all 4 wheels.1 of the worst 4wd systems.

pmsl at dumping the 32 engine from an R32

also, the haldex system, although FWD mainly, isnt the worst, not sure how you have worked that out

Defeats the purpose of 4wd thats why.
Never said it was the worst, just imo its one of the worst.
Id rather have full time 4wd.

why have full time 4wd when you dont need it all the time

more tyre wear, worse MPG, more power losses.

im not a fan

but its a reliable system, very rarely fucks up, and is still 4wd when needed

see past that

You want 4wd when you need it.... on demand, or via controlled measures.

Our cars...

Navara - has selectable RWD, 4WD, 4WD Hi. It drives a lot smoother in RWD, I'd only switch it to 4WD if I NEEDED the traction.

Skyline - The car is a conventional RWD UNTIL slip is detected in the rear wheels (or lateral movemnt via G sensors (altered by Torque Split Controller)). It then will shift varying amounts of torque to the front to keep control. It seems to work well and will pull the car out of some messes that would end up in a spin if you kept throttle in RWD.

You dont need 4WD on a normal daily drive down a motorway/through down. Its a fashion trend.

Im also pretty sure ive read somewhere about a controller to adjust which wheels receive most of the drive for arse out action??
If thats true then i suppose it does have its advantages.

Cheers for the replies guys, was needing to know if the 4wd system is going to be reliable at that sort of power as well.

ED: The figure of 350BHP is just the target I have set myself for the next project

Jr: Golf R32s are avaliable for that kind of money, Im interested why everyone thinks I should keep the R32 engine. Ive learned that tuning a NA engine doesnt get you anywhere near the gains of building a turbo engine on the same budget

Colin: I got a quote from a VW tuners near me, they wanted 16K for a TT conversion and would be 450BHP.

Im going to be doing the work and mapping myself so was hoping to get the complete engine done for 3K, think that would be a bit stretched on a TT conversion. Nice thought though

the 1.8 20v turbo's will be the easist to get big gains from, some people get 220-250 from just a remap!!

O a R32 bodykit will set you back about £1000 for a full genuine kit

just pop a low pressure turbo or SC onto the V6.... it'll take a bit off boost

Ive joined a VW site now so will spend a few hours browsing there. I just thought it would be similar to someone coming on mig with a C25XE saying they wanted 350BHP, It would be much easier to drop a tuned C20LET in.

Still at the idea stage now anyway, just doing some research and seeing if its worth doing. Cheers people
