3 months def, upto a maximum of 15 months if you keep leaving the country and returning back,
think theres a longer term 6 month one available as well

Thats just a holiday visa, you can also get a working holiday visa which is a year.

youll need to book asap for sydney NYE, most hostels are fully booked already and youll have to book minimum 7 nights im afraid.
