This has been on the news recently.
And in the current economic climate, and what ever economic climate, I really like the idea of them and don't think they're destroying the countryside at all.
If one was at the bottom of my garden, and I knew that with every revolution it's doing good, I wouldn't care too much.
It really really pisses me off when you have people who protest about them. Do they not realise the good renewable energy is? I went through a whole village in Hertfordshire and every house had "Say No To Wind turbines" in their windows etc. Completely idiotic imho AND nearly every house was plus £300k, people who can clearly afford their utility bills. I just don't think these campaigners against wind turbines realise how much they could help reduce bills for people and see the UK into the coming centuries, not relying on oil etc.

I think its ridiculous to protest against them, I think they look pretty cool and obviously once they are up and running its free energy.
Put loads of the fuckers up I say.

Exactly. I bet they are Lords etc that drive around in Range Rovers etc.
If they were Nuclear power stations then yes, I'd understand totally, but wind turbines, no.

I'm mixed on this topic, partly down to not knowing much about them
BUT I've heard somewhere that they can make some noise when operating too (not sure how loud etc)
But things to consider are:
What sort of power can they produce (i.e. how many houses can a single one power?)
I'm All for renewable energy btw, just curious as to the facts and figures

They do look terrible when you put them in places of natural beauty but it's a good idea. Not sure on the point about free energy though. The BBC News prediction was that bills were going up to fund the project. And once they're up, I don't see them going down when the costs are paid off.

It is ideal for generating electricity at a local level - European wind schemes are typically clusters of around 10 - 40 turbines, providing enough electricity for 4,000 to 16,000 households.
amazing stats and well worth it imho. If my maths are correct, 1 turbine will power 40 houses.

If theyre silent then
I see Ian's point about places of natural beauty too. When you see loads of them stuck in a green hillside. What are people thoughts on this if they were some other colour than white (possibly make them blend in a little better)

They aren't silent, that's for sure. There is one at the school I work at and it's noisy as fuck when the wind gusts up. But saying that it's not an annoying noise, it just sounds like the wind really.
You can put it another way to the protestors. You can have a wind turbine or two dotted all over the place, or you can have a gas turbine power station in your back garden which will wreck your beautiful countryside with acid rain.
We were going to put one up at the farm, but it wasn't cost effective enough as they are still expensive.

I think we have to start looking beyond the point of natural beauty now, what with the economy, and the fact fossil fuels will run out one day. Slapping them in the middle of Stone Henge or something then yes, bit horrible, but just on the top of a hill that is really windy all the time, go for it.
You could make the green, or blue I guess, but white is just neutral etc. I have seen mobile phone masts disguised to look like trees, which work quite well.
tbh, I can see the point of complaining about mobile phone masts etc, but wind turbines are doing good. I just think people miss the point with them

But 40 houses is crap compared to the cost - developers are giving up on them due to the rediculous times to get through planning compared to the payback times. Only thing going for them are grants from the Government.
I like them though - there was recently lots of talk about putting them up at Poddington (near Santa Pod) but the residents all objected and I think the scheme was scrapped.

But they have this week changed the planning process, so that there is one organisation/department that decides. It doesn't have to go through about 5 stages.

To compare for example, our company designed and built (for a client) a biogas plant.
It mixes pig muck with commercial green waste (vegetables from supermarkets that are out of date) and can constantly power 1500 homes - cost £5 million to build and will take 3 years to pay back for itself.
Oh, and its all hidden by trees so you can't see it

4000/10=400
1 turbine can provide energy for 400 homes.
