So yeah, anyway. Looks like I'm going to have loads of free time over the summer and I want to learn a language. I learnt German up to GCSE level and really like the language, and would like to learn it because of my German roots.

However, I don't really have the time or money to go to night classes, so want to get one of these 'teach yourself a language' packages which might include books, CD's etc etc.

Has anyone used one which actually worked? Was it interesting etc at the same time?

If you learn Spanish then you will easily be abel to learn Portugese and then Italian and French if you so wish... they are all based upon Latin and share many characteristics

Spanish is the key though

I wish I did Spanish at GCSE but I opted for German due to finding it easier to get the higher grade.

Would love to be able to speak spanish and it would open up the possibilty of working and living abroad

I did Latin GCSE and its a lot closer to English than any other language. Although your point about Spanish and those languages being similar is true, but thats more down to locality rather than based on Latin.

I got an A* in German for GCSE, so I was pretty good but I never carried it on for A-level despite my dad's advice. I so wish I did, considering one of my dream jobs is to work in advertising, PR and marketing of BMW

You could look at getting a personal tutor, should fit round any free time you have and tend not to cost that much (especially if its a student or something who is doing German!)

My best mate at Uni is German

it is an option which I have thought of, but he is obviously really busy etc with Uni like I am, as we're doing the same course.

Surely you must have a free hour or two a week? And can repay him in a few beers when you're out!

Spanish wasnt even an option at my high school, it was either French or German. And half the year did French for the first two years and the other half did German - so I was kind of pushed into doing French

We only had French or German. The clever kids did German. The not so clever ones did French

Same here, we learnt french from year 7 though and german was an option from year 9 so I stuck with french, I'd rather know french than german anyway tbh

I found 'Pimsleur' quite good for when I wanted to learn some Greek. Got the CD's from the libary and copied them to my phone. You do 30 minutes a day and could hold a basic conversation after a few days
