Due to a complete lack of neccessary miles now, I am looking at a 320 for a year before I go very very sensible when I start my own company this time next year.

I just want to know some basic running costs of a 6 cylinder 2.0 engine. What oil they take, how juicy they are, how often they want servicing, if they eat pads/disks etc.

Bearing in mind I currently do:

350 miles to £45 of diesel (1.30 a litre)
Service every 5-8kish (£30 of Oil on Halfs trade - VW505.01 stuff), filters comes to about £65 all in all.
Haven't touched pads or disks yet.

More than the derv I'd say. If things just generally go wrong, they'll cost more imho.

Keep the Ibiza you tart.

Try keeping a 12v for over 3 years

Company. What company?!

I know it'll be more than the derv.

If I can average 35 to the gallon, I'll be doing 450 miles to £70 at current prices. But will a 6 cylinder 2.0 do that? Meh, I dunno. I wanna live for a year before I go stupidly cheap to run, but I dont wanna have to take a loan out for petrol

if you can insure it, the 325i may be slightly more efficient. you don't have to work it so hard to maintain the pace that you want, plus the engines weigh the same.
the 318is would probably be a good bet, as it has the lighter 4pot lump, and not much less power. 1.9 16v iirc.

my vanos 325 would average about 26-28mpg with about 42mpg on the motorway.
my older pre-vanos 325 now averages about 24mpg and around 35mpg on motorway

servicing shoulldn't be too much. 6 cylinders have a quite large oil capacity, but use common 5w50 or similar.

you shouldn't have to worry about brakes if it's only for a year but discs and pads are cheap from GSF.

Wouldnt be too bad, mpg should be 30-35 if you drive sensible. Has a bit of power for when you want to use it. Servicing - shouldnt be too bad at all if your doing it yourself, my mate said his M3 wasnt too expensive at an independant.

Disk's/pads will be similar to any other car id expect if buying off the shelf at eurocarparts / GFS etc

Tke it your after a convertible Ja

I used to spend about £40 a week on mine doing around 300 miles, that was a year ago mind so maybe a bit more due to fuel costs,

Lovely cars though, cant beat 6 pot sound and quality of build for price they go for these days

Ahhh 1 thing about oil. I worked with someone that had a BMW for a while and used to service his own cars. iirc, he had a 5 litre oil catch tank thing. The BMW took 5.5 litres

Yes Colin. Was pacing a 328i on the motorway tonight with the top down, thinking wow, thats nice, and then his ears must be hurting (I was the sunner side of three figures)

Are the 318's a much better bet then?

Say I could squeeze 35mpg out of the 2.0, would I get any more out of the 318?

Sorry to keep banging on (its not jsut the MPG i'm concerned about), but ive seen some of the bills for work to my uncles jag, plus the 17mpg average I managed on one run in his 3.0 V6 S-Type

I personally wouldnt be looking to buy an e36 for speed like doug is talkin about, its more about comfort and build quality i found with mine, if i hadnt have got a job so far away from home i would have kept it, was a great car.

So the 318 would be the best bet for the lowest running costs? Its a shame cos I love that 6 cylinder sound.

tbh, anything that was originally a top marque car isn't going to be hugely cheap or hugely economical. Between cars I'd say it's like splitting hairs.

IM not asking it to be 12v or derv.

I'm asking it not to break my 19 year olds salary.

Yes it will be expensive if you go to BMW but if your not to bothered about Full dealership service history any normal garage will be fine for servicing, granted bits are more expensive, but as a rule if you get a nice/good one, they dont break often

Ive thought about a convertible, trust me ive thought about it lots I just dont i'd get the use of it

Ive test drove a 318 E46 & it was no slug, drove well, no idea what the 320's are like though. I thought rule of thumb 6 cyliders were the ones to go for.

Its true smaller engine you cane it more to get it moving....use more fuel. My mate used to swear his M3 Evo would sit in the 30's on a motorway cruise. Suppose in 6th gear at low rev's it wouldnt be working the engine much.

Get a bigger engine, if its just for a year of fun! Fuck fuel prices!!

Colin, you don't know how tempting it is, but I have to keep the sensible hat on.

I'd get use out of it, when it isnt raining the top would be down

Friend of mine has just got an M3 (non evo) e36, says he's seen 34 at a constant 80. 25 round town, and he drives like he stole it

He will, i used to sit at 30 all the time in it, and it was fantastic, on the motorway it was great sat at 80-90 without a hum from the engine, it was silent, i went down to pvs in it and i think it cost me £50 in petrol to do 400miles round trip.
