I work at a MASSIVE place, out of the entire place the section I work on is the biggest, we are also split across 4 shifts to ensure 24 hours, 7 day a week, 364 day a year working (closed xmas day).
On the shift I work on - B shift - I applied for the job as union rep for the section I work on (the biggest one as mentioned above) - and I got it!
What it means is that I'll be the "go to" man for about 120 people on my shift should they have any problems at work, if I can't help or it needs to go further then i have to report to the on-shift senior shop steward.

Pretty nervous about it, but I love a challenge where you have to think and act on the spot with no planning - so should be a good experience for me.
Alternatively I could make a complete cock and balls of it and end up losing a lot of respect and friends over it, but nothing ventured nothing gained eh?

Anyone doing/ever done anything similar?

Unions are (mostly) useless.

Theres one they ask you to join at Tesco and pay for it out your pay packet each month. What do you get.........a magazine.

Sod that.

But well done

RMT Union FTW.

Good luck with it, might be worth learning a few books on the 'workplace' to read to know what people can and can't do.

My company is also huge and the Union are totally incapable of getting anything out of them. Wouldn't ever want to be a rep. In my experience(no slight on you Jules) Union Reps are generally all mouth and no brains and use it as a way of getting a couple of hours off work every couple of weeks to attend meetings.

A funny little story, the last Senior Rep at our place, a married man of 50 decided to use our final round of pay negotiations with one of the richest men in England as an oportunity to come out as a cross dresser and turned up in Skirt, Blouse, Heels, chicken fillet bra and a blonde wig!!!!!! (we didn't get a rise )

[Work hat]
You join a union for what they can do for you should you ever need them - i.e if your job is ever at risk etc
Not the crap free bi-monthly magazine you get!
[/Work hat]

But yeah, I see what you mean!
