First i'll start by saying that none of this is purposely derogotory towards the financially challenged.
I've noticed that over the past 15 years a strange transformation has happened.
Going back 10-15yrs it started off that with all the council estates near me, the houses we're tatty and they always drove round in right old nails barely fit for the road.
Now driving round the same estates now, the houses have been tidied up but still belong to the council but there are decent, new cars parked alongside every one of them, when I myself can't afford a new car and I earn reasonable money.
Now is this all because of these ultra high interest 'lend money to everyone' car dealers, a rise in benefits or just an all round improvement of working class finances, debt consolidation efforts or low priced new cars? I can't figure it out.
Ben.

It's because the council does up the outside of the house to make it look good and they all deal drugs to pay for the cars.

Probably a bit of increase in handouts and the ease of getting loans (not now though!).

Because with their 10 kids and free house, they use our tax money to buy nice cars.

possibly because council tennants are paying low rent for there home where private owners struggle with high mortgages.
means they have more disposable cash for material things.
also it could be the children of the tennant that have started work and have a nice car. the only new car i've owned was when i lived at home and had just started proper work.

Possible reason is that the only cheap houses in many areas are ex council/local authority owned properties. People have bought the houses on the cheap, tidied them up a bit and still have very small mortgages compared to most new homeowners/FTB's and are able to afford nice cars etc. Personally rather have a shite car and live in a nice area imho.

Agree with that, my opposite number at work who earns exactly the same as me(min 27k p.a) rents a council flat for £30 a week!! The place is a fucking dive though, would much rather pay my £200 a week mortgage to live somewhere nice and quiet.

Children can't drive
Seriously though, I know the same families live in the house that were there coz their kids are the same age as me in some occasions.
I just find it strange that as the money belt tightens the people who have less money to throw around have a shit load more new stuff going their way.

Mobility allowance for the disabled. All you have to be is over weight and you can claim the £10k for a car off the government.

The use of area based initiative programmes which have been set up by the government over the last few years, include the improvement of housing and the environment around them. areas that are classed as living in poverty etc.

Makes me laugh tho, people moaning about this sort of thing. If you want a life like that, then go and live on a council estate, quit your job and claim like hell ffs.
.....and i'd possibly think you haven't got this dream motor because you keep jetting off round the world and blowing all your cash?

For one, i'm not moaning, its just an observation I made recently. I wouldnt want a life on the social to be fair, the whole 'don't worry the state will pay for everything' is against my moral ethics. If I really needed to go on the Doll then I would, seeing as I payed my way anyway, but I would still try and get a job.
As for affording a new car, its not on my list of priorities to be honest.

Because the breeders think it's their right to have numerous children to various fathers and then live off the state having never contributed anything in their life.
Perhaps.

Sorry, didn't necessarily mean to say you were moaning. It's just this topic has been raised a few times on here before.
I'm not knocking you either. I'd love to travel around the world, but alike you, my priorities are different and i'm concentrating on building a life for me and my family. It's just you said you couldn't afford a new car and now you're back-tracking saying it's not something you're assed about.

It's not like that on our council estate. Over half of the houses are now privately owned. We still rent ours because we can't afford to buy it yet. The wife works and I'm at home until the youngest starts school full time (sept 2009). The plan then is to buy the house and extend into the loft - fitting 5 people into 2 bedrooms is difficult but we manage.
We haven't moved as it's a really good estate (I grew up next door) and there's hardly ever any trouble.
As for cars - the wife's Rover cost 500.oo and I'm just on with reconditioning the engine and my father in law gave us my Corsa - although it's cost a fortune for me to get it how I want it.
There are a few families on this estate who don't work and have nice stuff but as we don't know them well I couldn't tell you how they manage it.

I live in a council house and have a fairly new and decent car. I'm not ashamed of it either. Means more money to spend on the kids and social life. I don't get housing benefit as I earn a fair wage. My partner is training to be a teacher and together once qualified we should be able to buy a decent house.
Reason for moving into a council house was having a child when we were both 17 and working only part time whilst as college.

My cousins and Auntie all grew up on a council estate, still live there now after 30 years, and it was a rough estate. If you're really struggling and simply can;t make ends meet, then I don't find it a problem. Its when you get people that COULD afford a private house and they are keeping people that really are on the bread line out of a council house and STILL got a nice car on the drive that it gets a bit much, perhaps selfish, perhaps not. I just think that people that can't afford luxuries in life like a new car amongst the more obvious important thing should be the ones in the council houses receiving help and the ones that don;t have trouble making ends meet should be last in line.

Another council estate in Leicester got bulldozed and they moved the tennants into newly made properties. A lot of them promptly ripped the kitchens out and sold the appliances that were supllied for them.
Re-reading what i've said so far, it seems i'm really down on council houses or something but i'm genuinely not.
