I know buying any car is a risk as to its history and what not. Vans are probably a whole lot worse.

I just wondered what peoples opinions on buying ex-commercial vehicles, that have come from a 'reputable' company like BT which would have stringent servicing regs and stuff like that?!

Corsavans (and Combo's) are considerably cheaper than their 'car' counterparts.

Buying any used car/van is a gamble.

i would consider the vans role... for example many old ex mod landrovers only have 60k and have been serviced well etc.. but have spent many hundreds of hours at idle in a field running equipment..

maybe some vans have done the same etc

Get yourself off to manheim auctions or BCA.
Combos and suchlike are a good buy, with average selling prices of about £2550 with mileages of 60500.

One report I read said that the gearbox typically sees over million changes by royal mail drivers and anything up to 20 drivers per day.

I would avoid Royal Mail tbh, I've seen how they're driven and they naturally do a lot of stop start driving.

Found a dealer in Surrey that has all ex-BT vans at the prices are reasonable. Also a Corsavan on eBay for £2500 reserve, 47k miles, 1.3CDTi and ex-Siemens used for meter readings, so not been carrying loads. Bargain, especially as any good Corsa car with the same engine are £5k.

I'm just concerned with it being driven hard from cold and the turbo giving up prematurely etc.

Probably won't get a van either - pointless thread really

My attitude of company cars is this:

Get one, 0 miles on the clock, tke it out and give it death to see what it goes like.

Then, becuase you can and you wont have to repair it, give it death EVERYWHERE.

I drove one of the pool cars at work, woman drove it most of the time and I think I gave it its' first 6700RPM session . Broke the 1.2 16v Corsa D in

Ex-police cars ought to be a good buy.

Well maintained and shouldn't be driven (quite) so hard

Other end of the scale I know but mine was £245. Engine is superb, The bodies get a hard life but nothing that can't be taken care of. Being Diesel they go on forever. You can still do mods by lifting things from their car versions.

I wouldn't buy an ex Royal Mail van either! They just get hammered all over! Drive mine like a rally car on the rural rounds aswell! And the servicing on them is wank! My vans been in 3 times and still doesn't drive straight!
