I thought id be really brave last night and cook something i've never done before.
This really isnt for the faint hearted!
On sunday morning a group of us went scuba diving at Brixam Breakwater, I caught the biggest crab i'd ever seen along with a few scallops!
first thing to do was get him in the sink fora big of a clean:

The next problem was DO i have a pot big enuf for him?

(cabled tied temporarily cos i dint want to be pinched!)
with a little manouvering he went in:

While he was cooking it was time to look at the scallops:

With a bit of cleaning and priing apart:

turns into something which looks alot nicer:

With the crab cooked i let all the water drain off:

Then proceeded to take him apart:

this kinda went horribly wrong because there wasnt much meat in the main body (maybe i overcooked/undercooked im not sure?) but there was plent of meat in the claws.
While the meat cooled down it was time to cook the scallops:

With the scallops finally cooked, it was a case of laying everything out:

yum yum i say

that looks horrible, but fair play. I like the 'eat what you catch' kind of idea.
Do you boil the crab alive?

all the crab white meat is in the claws any way, the body is mostly brown meat, which is still nice

Crab is tastey, but the only good bit to eat is in the claws...

They have a very limited motor neurone system which means they can't really feel much. Hence why they will pinch off eachothers claws and legs with no problems if you leave them in a bucket together

Cant stand scallops but crab is nice.
You can buy it in packs which is much easier than catching and cooking it yourself though

I must say the inside of the crab looks about as apertising as a fatal road traffic accident.
Fair play for catching that big bastad tho

So one minute their alive, and then they just die without feeling anything?

Yes they do, although if they had any vocal cords I dare say they might scream

it was quite a struggle catching him actually.
He was half buried in the sand, so i had to dig a bit around him, then pull quite hard to get him out, by then all the sand had unsettled and I couldnt see my hand infront my face.
I had to swim a few meters away into the clear before trying to bag the bugger.
He was placed into a cold pot of water and gently brought up to the boil which sends them off to sleep, a much more humain way of doing it. there was no fighting or screams from him.

would they actually hurt you if you got pinched?
I can't really imagine them being particularly strong.
